The redesigned 2024 Chevrolet Colorado mid-size truck is taking on the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV and the Ford Super Duty for the highly prestigious title of North American Truck of the Year. The award used to be announced at the start of the North American International Auto Show but still takes place in early January despite the auto show moving to later in the year.
It is odd to have two vehicles from one automaker, but one is an EV, while the other is a redesigned mid-size internal combustion vehicle. Newly redesigned Ford trucks are always highly anticipated and strong contenders for any title.
In any other year, I’d favor the new EV vehicle as a potential winner, but EVs aren’t viewed as the rare technological marvels as they were previously. I’m sure the Silverado EV will get high praise for performance and technology, but is it enough to win?
2024 Chevrolet Colorado Takes Home Huge Honor
As I reported previously, The 2024 Chevrolet Colorado has already won a significant honor and that signals it may be a frontrunner.
MotorTrend says this about the Colorado:
“The Colorado lineup’s performance on- and off-road, particularly the ZR2's prowess, is nothing short of exceptional, rivaling even some of the most revered off-road vehicles available,” said Ed Loh, MotorTrend Group head of editorial. “Earning MotorTrend’s Truck of the Year award is a testament to the Colorado’s all-encompassing excellence across various terrains and utility needs.”
Chevrolet redesigned the Colorado for the new model year adding a new Trail Boss package but also keeping the powerful Z71, ZR2 models as well as the LT and Work trims. The result is a full lineup for whatever the driver needs. MotorTrend credited the Colorado’s modern interior, versatile bed and strong feature content, on top of incredible off-road capability across the lineup, as part of its winning package.
2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV
Although production of the 2024 Silverado EV was slowed significantly by the UAW strike, Chevy is still expecting big things from the Ultium-based truck. At launch, the Silverado EV will be available in two configurations, an RST First Edition and a fleet-oriented WT (work truck) model. Each will offer a comprehensive suite of standard and available safety technologies.
The flagship RST First Edition includes:
- Four-wheel steering
- Multi-Flex Midgate that expands the truck’s cargo capability while maintaining seating for a rear row passenger
- Large, 17-inch-diagonal LCD freeform infotainment screen paired with a neighboring 11-inch-diagonal reconfigurable driver instrument display
- Trailering-capable Super Cruise, the industry’s first true hands-free driver-assistance technology, allowing drivers to travel hands-free on more than 200,000 miles of compatible roads across the U.S. and Canada
The Work Truck will launch first for fleet customers and offer 510 horsepower and 615 lb.-ft. of torque. The WT will offer 10,000 pounds of towing and 1,400 pounds of payload.
Ford F-Series Super Duty
There is a reason that Ford outsells its competitors when it comes to trucks. The Super Duty is designed to give truck drivers more of what they want.
According to Torque News Reporter Marc Stern “In addition to “Built Ford Tough” power and capability, the all-new Super Duty is loaded with technology aimed at helping workers do their jobs. It is the first pickup in the U.S. with embedded 5G capability. The Super Duty line features a host of driver-assist technologies. It introduces the new Ford Pro Upfit Integration System, designed for customers who rely on upfits and body equipment such as utility cranes and plows to accomplish a job. Super Duty’s 5G modem from Qualcomm Technologies can also provide a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to 10 devices to help keep workers and families connected on the go and support Ford Power-Up software updates while driving to keep making the truck better over time.”
