Rumored: Next Mercedes-Benz SL Could Use the Platform From the AMG GT

As we reported in September, Mercedes-Benz has tapped AMG to lead development of the next SL. At the time, the next SL was believed to be based on the MSA (modularen sportwagen architektur) modular platform that will under some Mercedes models in the future. But Autocar reports that the next SL will actually use the underpinnings of the AMG GT Coupe.

Using these underpinnings will allow the SL to have best possible weight distribution thanks to a rear-mounted transaxle and engine mounted longitudinally. The GT will also give its double wishbone suspension setup, aluminium body structure, and carbon fiber torque tube to the SL. It is likely the SL will get Mercedes' optional Air Body Control system to provide a smooth ride when needed.

For engines, the SL will come with the brand's new M256 inline six-cylinder engine paired with an 15 kW electric motor and electric turbocharger to deliver 402 horsepower. A new AMG variant with 450 horsepower will be next, followed by the SL63 and SL65.

Autocar says the next SL will debut in 2019.
