Mercedes' U.S. Branch Decides To Pass On X-Class For Now

Almost a month ago, Mercedes-Benz revealed the X-Class concepts. These would be a preview for a new pickup that would be launching next year in certain markets. However, the U.S. will not be one of them.

Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Dietmar Exler told Automotive News (Subscription Required) that they will be passing on the X-Class for now as it doesn't make sense at the moment. That doesn't mean Mercedes-Benz USA will not sell the X-Class at all.

“Once the next version of the truck comes out -- when we see the next iteration -- there might be an opportunity to bring it in the medium and the long-term,” said Exler.

For the time being, Exler said the company is continuing to evaluate whether it makes for the U.S. to get the X-Class down the road.

“That’s exactly what we’re taking a look at. We want to bring it when we believe it makes sense as Mercedes to bring out the pickup truck.”

Exler wouldn't say when the X-Class could come to U.S. other than the company would keep an eye on how the vehicle is doing in other markets and continue market evaluations. Automotive News notes that Mercedes tends to refresh their vehicles every four years and redesigns them after seven. That could mean we might be looking as late as 2024 as possible date for when the X-Class could come here.
