Chevrolet bringing out two new Z-Spec Sonic sedans to SEMA

Among the sporty compacts featured in the Chevrolet Performance display at the 2012 SEMA Show will be the new Sonic Z-Spec 1 and Sonic Z-Spec 2.5, both of which are based on the 4-door Sonic sedan equipped with varying levels of modification.

First off, we have the Chevrolet Sonic Z-Spec 1 Concept which is modified with Chevrolet Accessories that are either currently available or they are concept items that could head to the production catalog if there is enough interest and a good reception. The Z-Spec Concept begins with a Chevrolet Accessories ground effects kit painted Synergy Green to match the body, a unique mesh style upper and lower grille treatment finished in piano black, the rear spoiler from the Sonic RS, Ashen Grey Metallic Z-Spec stripe and logos and 18” split spoke wheels finished Ashen Grey with a Synergy Green painted pocket.

To improve the performance of the sleek Chevrolet Sonic Z-Spec 1 Concept, a Chevrolet Accessories/Borla exhaust system has been added along with a conceptual Chevrolet Performance suspension system that includes lowering springs and performance tuned dampers that also lower the car a bit for a sportier ride. A Chevrolet Performance big brake kit featuring four piston calipers up front clamping down on massive 16” rotors help the Z-Spec 1 Concept stop as well as it handles.

On the inside, Chevrolet Sonic Z-Spec 1 Concept gets a Jet Black and Titanium interior layout featuring a set of Chevrolet Accessories stainless steel pedals, Chevrolet Accessories stainless steel sill plates, the Chevrolet MyLink system and a Kicker 200 watt sound system with a booming subwoofer.

The second Sonic sedan teased in the images on the right is the Chevrolet Sonic Z-Spec 2.5 Concept, which takes a more hardcore approach to the aggressive design cues shown on the Z-Spec 1 Concept. This package begins on the outside with a matte Abalone White Tricoat paint with grey and orange Z-Spec decals. Next, the designers added a unique ground effects package that gives the whole car a lower stance, a Chevrolet Accessories rear spoiler, tinted headlights and tail lights, and conceptual 18x7.5-inch wheels in Galvano Silver with Signal Red edges.

Inside, the Chevrolet Sonic Z-Spec 2.5 Concept features a Jet Black leather-trimmed interior with Orange Crust leather trim and orange accent stitching, orange anodized and Piano Black interior trim plates, suede/leather wrapped door panels and instrument cluster finished in black and orange and a leather wrapped steering wheel. Finally, a 200 watt Kicker sound system with a subwoofer provides some interior boom while and the same Chevrolet Accessories stainless steel pedals and sill covers found on the Z-Spec 1 model give the car a bit of bling inside.

Finally, the Chevrolet Sonic Z-Spec 2.5 Concept features many of the same performance accessories as the Z-Spec 1 Concept including the Chevrolet Performance suspension kit, the big brake kit up front with 4 piston calipers and 16 rotors and the Borla exhaust system. However, Z-Spec 2 Concept adds the rear brakes from the Sonic RS along with a conceptual Chevrolet Performance cold air intake package.

While GM has only teased these two Chevrolet Sonic sedans, we can expect that other companies will offer up their own take on the Sonic sedan and hatchback in the GM display – similar to what we have seen in prior years. We can expect to hear more about that as we get closer to SEMA but in the meantime, GM has this metallic green and matte white Sonic sedan to show off the customization options of the sporty little Sonic compact.
