The Mazda MX-5--commonly known in the U.S. as the Mazda Miata--will be playing giant killer as it takes on heavyweight names in racing including Aston Martin, Porsche, Lotus and BMW in the 2011 Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship. A specially-prepared lightweight MX-5 GT will compete in the "endurance" class, which allows heavily modified production car as opposed to the production class, which allows mods mostly related to safety.

Japanese auto production has fallen to only 35 percent of their former output as a result of the Tohuko earthquake and tsunami, according to IHS Automotive Insight. Still the situation in Libya has an impact as well. "It's volatility that really drives people to smaller cars," said Aaron Bragman, an analyst for the auto authority.

Mazda, Mitsubishi and Suzuki have re-opened plants in Japan as the country and deals with nuclear disaster risks and regular aftershocks but automotive giants Toyota and Honda have announced that their plants will remain closed until at least this weekend.

Honda Motor Company announced today that they are extending their production stoppage caused by the Japanese earthquakes, tsunamis and chain of nuclear blasts; Mazda and Suzuki have both planned to restart production at a few of their plants originally shut down from the quakes.

Mazda and Subaru have announced that their Japanese production facilities will remain shut down until at least next week in the wake of the earthquake and ensuing tsunami, although Mitsubishi has re-opened their plants with the hopes of assessing their situation for production.

Last week, Mazda offered some interesting news as they issued a recall due to spiders crawling into the evaporative canister vent lines and causing excessive fuel tank pressure and now, Honda Motor Company has announced a technical service bulletin for a similar problem on select Honda Accord models.
