Electric Vehicle News, Reviews and Analysis

Electric vehicles (EVs) have come a long way in a short time. Barely a decade has passed since the ambitious Silicon Valley startup Tesla Motors introduced the world to an electric car capable of traveling more than 300 miles on a single charge. Since then, Elon Musk and Tesla have convinced many dubious onlookers that electric vehicles are not only here to stay, but that they can become the future of transportation.

Other automakers have joined the EV movement at very different rates. The Nissan Leaf, for example, debuted in 2010 and went on to become the best-selling all-electric vehicle in the world for a time. Competition from the BMW i3 followed, as well as the plug-in hybrid Chevy Volt and its all-electric successor the Chevy Bolt EV, but only the Tesla Model 3 has been able to steal the Leaf's crown. Heading into a new decade, electric vehicles are set to go from strength-to-strength, with new models like the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV competing in the entry-level category and the Audi e-Tron, Porsche Taycan, or Jaguar I-PACE vying with Tesla at the top end of the market.

With entire classes of vehicle still lacking an electric version, such as pick-up trucks and affordable SUVs, there's huge potential for expansion and growth in the EV marketplace. For now, Tesla is still blazing the trail, but legacy manufacturers are lining up to electrify their fleets and promising startups like Rivian and Byton are waiting in the wings with exciting new electric vehicles.

The future is bright for EVs and you can keep up to date with all the latest stories right here on Torque News.

Plug-in vehicles and tax planning. It's that time again

In my day job as a vehicle salesperson, specializing in plug-in vehicles, I am constantly amazed to see how little understanding there is about the federal government’s Income Tax Credit for EVs and plug-in hybrids. I’ve even had tax professionals give incorrect guidance to their clients, so here’s a bit of info...

Tesla Model S $30K Price Drop? No, Tesla Doesn’t do Deals

A recent email from a Tesla dealer caught the attention of the Tesla Motors Club. A very interesting and unusual sentence was in this email “We are offering showroom incentives up to $30,000 off the original configuration price.” This phrase is not one Tesla themselves say often, and with a standard list no lower than $75,000 did the Model S and Model X just drop in price, if so why now?

Why Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Is Worth The Wait

Will the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV ever arrive in the US? This is an important question as it is currently the best selling plug in hybrid in Europe. So, it would make sense that Mitsubishi would want to get it to our shores as fast as possible. However, this does not seem to be the case. The latest estimate on when the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV may arrive in the states in November 2017.

Can Tesla’s Semi truck be a disruptive force in the trucking industry?

I’m certain that is what Elon Musk is hoping it will be and it seems to have that potential. CEO Elon Musk said that Tesla Semi will out torque any diesel truck and it will enable long distance trucking with full loads. If a report from Scott Perry, an executive at Ryder System is to be believed, the Tesla Semi will have 200-300 mile range which would limit its uses to local & regional freight routes.

Does Tesla removing the restrictions on Ludicrous mode make it less reliable?

Earlier this year, Tesla Model S owners discovered that the automaker was restricting power output in certain models equipped with its "Ludicrous" performance mode. The limits were tied to frequent use of "Launch Mode," essentially Tesla's version of launch control. If a driver used it too much, Tesla restricted power output to prevent excessive wear and tear on components.
