Owners of 2014 Chevrolet Silverados are furious they can't get their AC fixed

Dozens of 2014 Chevrolet Silverado owners have contacted us over their frustration about their trucks' air conditioning problems. Owners say that they are unable to get their trucks fixed properly.

Owners of 2014 Chevrolet Silverados are apparently not getting much help in solving problems with the air conditioning on their trucks. I first wrote about this problem with 2014 Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras in October of 2016.

Since then I have received dozens of comments from other angry owners, convinced that General Motors is not doing anything to help them.

Scott P. writes, “My 2014 Sierra 1500 as a leak in the AC condenser. Only have 50k miles. Can't get a replacement compressor anywhere. Whatever inventory was available has been bought out and marked up heavily, as much as $800 for the condenser. What is GMC doing to resolve this issue? Why aren't they on the hook for the epidemic failure?”

Angry with General Motors’ failure to act

Phillip A. is furious that GM has not issued a mass recall for this widespread issue. “Add my Chevy Silverado to the long list of AC issues. Started a case document with GM. Was told it's not a big problem or a recall issue. Been to the dealer three times now. This past appointment ended with an empty box for my parts. Compressor was suppose to be inside the box and nothing, what a waste of another day. Now it's going to be reordered and was told the compressors are back ordered. For a isolated issue, parts should not be back ordered. I for one will not be buying a new truck from GM.”

Bill is also angry, he says, “My 2014 Silverado will more than likely be my last GM product ever. Mine needs a condenser, 3 year old truck with 60k miles on it and it's on intergalactic backorder. Dealer told me about a TSB regarding a updated condenser so I tried calling the Customer Assistance Center to see if they could provide some "cost assistance". I was told that since I bought it used they couldn't help me. Really? So this is how GM supports its products? Hope they enjoyed the bailout money Obama gave them, I'll be trading this $%#@ at the Ford dealer across the street.”

Steven B. is irate. “Hot air blowing with AC on. I googled "AC problems 2014 silverado" and got lots of hits. I replaced the compressor line, but it still wouldn't hold freon. I contacted GM (1-800-222-1020) and told them my warranty was out (48000 miles), but have owned the vehicle less than 3 years. They set me up with a local dealer to have the AC checked out. Yep, it was the compressor and it would cost $1098.00 to repair. I explained to the GM rep that this is my 4th new GM truck, and I've never had AC issues with any of them. They said they'd see what they could do. Well, after sending me to the dealership to confirm the AC problem, GM refused to help on the cost. I intend to write letters to the editors of most of the auto magazines about this. I encourage everyone to do the same.”

There are forums with dozens of pages of similar complaints about the 2014 Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras. The owners understand that problems can develop, what they can’t understand is why GM is refusing to help them resolve the issues.

Michael D. is terribly disappointed in GM. “AC CONDENSER gone in my 2014 Sierra. $1200 to fix. HOWEVER!! I found out today it would be up to 2 months to get the part because, 18000 units are on back order! YES! 18000 units! Why is there not a recall on this issue? Ridiculous.”

Contacting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

Brian H. says that he contacted NHTSA and they recommend banding together. “25,500 miles and yes my AC has gone out. Chevy support was useless and no voluntary recall. I was instructed by the National Highway Traffic/Safety admin to do the following: Contact: State attorney general Advise on recourse Possibly take part in a class action lawsuit Contact the Federal Trade Commission - 877.382.4357 lodge a complaint. If enough of us file a complaint they will act (just don't know how many that will take).”

Just this afternoon, I received this complaint, from an owner named James. “I have been waiting for over 60 days for a A/C condenser for a 2014 silverado, Chevy customer care offered the standard we cant help you the part is on back order excuse and then asked what do you want us to do about it? Chevy and their team of lawyers have already calculated their loss and dont care about this problem. Contact DOT and file a compliant and follow up with your state attorney office. Don't let this slide, Chevy and GMC must learn for their lack of service.”

It certainly appears that this issue will cost GM truck sales in the future. It is unfortunate that owners are currently suffering, especially as the hot weather is hitting across the country.

I used to own a GM and had similar issues with getting replacement parts it's as if GM is consciously forcing you to get something new. I did - and it was a Honda.

Seems like everyone is waiting on GM to respond to all the claims concerning the 2014 - 2016 Silverado...be in mind that GM doesn't take complaints unless they are life threating... I to can be added to the list of folks waiting for an AC Condenser that's on backlog awaiting outrageous prices...the lowest was 899.00 from the dealer in Mississippi...I can just imagine other places...I've been too the dealer 4 times in one month...with temperatures here...already 95 degrees... I went from paying for a leak too waiting fro more parts...such as a condenser...I believe that GM doesn't care unless it involves a lawsuit...& since AC units are not life threatening...then what to do???

I don't believe there is anything you can do, I could not see driving in Mississippi w/o AC. I'd pay the price for the condenser and put it up for sale immediately, that situation won't get better. GM is having trouble moving their trucks and are discounting them significantly, that takes a toll and apparently that is in funding production of replacement parts. What you might be able to do is convince your dealer to take the truck as a trade on a new one with the cost of the new condenser and the labor subtracted from the price GM is already giving. I've heard of Jeep dealers doing that. I get brand loyalty and all that, however I am a former GM owner for exactly this reason - and my dad told me so before I bought it, I won't make that mistake again.

I am having the same issue as everyone else a pinhole leak in the weld of the condenser in the front of the engine compartment talk to a few dealerships around Dallas and was told there's no point in bringing it in as it was a 90-day back order I actually have an extended warranty but what good does that do me if I can't get the part until October it's supposed to be 97 degrees this weekend.

Guess I'll just have to drive my daughter's 2004 Trailblazer with 246 thousand miles on it

Its not only a 2014 problem.. its happening with all 2015 thru 2017 1500 pickups and Tahoes as well.. I've been told anywhere between 4 and 17 weeks for the condenser! So this appears to be a lot bigger problem than GM is letting customers believe. They have been absolutely useless as far as help! My $67,000 2015 LTZ Tahoe is 2.5 years old and has only 18,000 miles on it and is blowing hot air.. unacceptable!! GM's solution is to tell me to patiently wait for the part and do not care that I have 2 young children and its almost July!!

I also have a 2015 Tahoe LTZ with 21,000 miles on it. Still covered under warranty, so I'm now driving a courtesy car, Malibu. GM told me I am lucky to get a courtesy car as I should only be eligible for one for 3 days. I went nuts and asked shouldn't it be GM's problem since they don't have the part and it will only take a couple of hours to replace it? I said I'm the lucky one who paid 65 grand for a vehicle that I can't drive in Kansas heat? Screw you GM! You will never EVER get my business again. Sign me up for a class action!

Add me to the list, 2015 GMC Sierra, need an air conditioning condenser and they are on a national backorder, waiting since June 1

Bryan (not verified)    June 29, 2017 - 3:31PM

Team,

2014 Silverado 1500 LT Condenser gone, galactic backorder, been waiting for over 90 days. Was told this is a big problem by dealership. They said in the Kalamazoo dealership alone there are over 10 vehicles waiting and cop cars would be first and then southern vehicles. Does not look promising to get this summer. I am under extended warranty. I am going to request they refund my cost every month that I pay for warranty coverage in a check until they can get the part and they can get with GM to reimburse them. I will probably get told to get F&&*&^ . Ill let you know how it goes.

Todd Bagwell (not verified)    July 5, 2017 - 3:51PM

I noticed my issue in March when I traveled down to Tallahassee Florida from Nashville TN. I had to purchase nearly $100 worth of freon just to get me most of the way through the trip. Still waiting to get my truck fixed so I can sell it and get something else not manufactured by GM. Needless to say, I will never purchase another GM vehicle.

I have a 2014 Silverado with the pinhole leak at the Weld. At a cost of over $1200 I had to have it replaced in Tucson Arizona. I was aware of the hundreds upon hundreds of Silverado owners who have the same problem. The dealership in Tucson, as well as a dealership in Durand Michigan claim they haven’t heard of this problem. That’s to let you all know that they are not paying attention at all regarding our part predicament. For what it’s worth, I have been buying Chevrolet products for the last 50+ years, during which time I was the buyer for a local phone company for all of their trucks. I will never again recommend a Chevrolet product, by a Chevrolet product, or a GM product for that matter. If enough people walk away from Chevrolet it’s just possible, though likely not probable, that the company will start to take notice that they are not able to provide people with quality products, they will lose all their business. My own purchase of over 30 GM products over the years had convinced me the products were built to a standard. Unfortunately, that standard of quality and customer service no longer seems to exist.

Oh, come on Richard... prior owner of 30 GM products and this one issue turns you away for life... Goodbye. Enjoy complaining about your next product from a different make or simply complaining because you are short sighted and self centered. I guess it's our loss that after "50 years of buying GM vehicles" you'll be dead soon and unable to purchase another one anyway.

We have four 2014 Silverado Trucks in our companies fleet and every one of the condensers has gone out. When we called GM they stated that this was not a common problem to which I disagreed given all our trucks AC units had gone out already. We are now starting to have the identical problem again and are being told by the dealer and GM that we will just have to replace the condenser again and there is nothing they can do since there is no recall. We have been a GM loyal company for many years and never considered any other trucks, however that all ended with their approach to our issue. Currently we are comparing new trucks for our fleet and GM is not even on our list.

Gary Auclair (not verified)    July 12, 2017 - 10:55PM

2014 Sierra- Condenser has a pin hole on the left side at the weld, same as everyone else. GM said sorry could be 2 weeks or 2 months for the back order and you're on your own. I have had a 1996 1999 2004 and now this POS 2014. It has been nothing but headaches. I am going to take a big hit and trade for a Tundra. I learned my lesson.

C. La Blue (not verified)    July 13, 2017 - 11:53PM

This is impacting multiple models of GM vehicles and multiple model years. I had the same issue on my 2015 Chevy Tahoe. AC failed twice in 2.5 weeks. I filed a complaint with NHTSA and Chevy, and like many others mention in this thread, Chevy refused to help. Would only allow you to have Chevy repair if you wanted help. That would be great, except Chevy can't get part to their own dealers. They are telling their own dealers not to bother calling about status, as they have no idea when they can provide parts other than it will be months. I've checked with 4 Chevy dealers across the entire U.S. All say the same thing, they have dozens on backorder for their customers and no ETA on repairs. I live in a tiny town in CA. Just in this one tiny town our Chevy dealer has 20 AC condensers on backorder for a single ag company with 20 Silverado pickups in their fleet whose AC has died, and a dozen more on backorder for other customers with Tahoe, Yukons and Silverados-2014, 2015 & 2016. CA has a used car lemon law, and Chevy wanted to go down the road of buying back my $60k vehicle rather than allow me to go to a third party repair shop who could replace the condenser with an after market part for $950. Said they'd only help with repair if I went to Chevy dealer. And, of course, in order to qualify for buyback they said I had to be able to document the maintenance history-which they knew I couldn't since I bought it used. It's 100+ daily in the summer where I live. My Tahoe is black with black interior. I couldn't even drive my car for weeks. So when the third party shop lucked out and got me an after market condenser, I had no other choice than to just take the financial hit myself and get the repair done. Chevy admitted that they knew this was a nationwide issue affecting thousands of customers, but regardless, they weren't willing to help. I hope some slick lawyer jumps on this and hits GM with a huge class action suit over this. This has the potential to be another Takata airbag issue, as there are so many vehicles of various models and model years impacted nationwide. I know I'd sign on to a class action suit!

Matthew Lerer (not verified)    July 14, 2017 - 3:16PM

It's not just the Chevy's. According to GM it's all GM trucks and suv's. My 2015 Tahoe LTZ has had no air conditioning since April. Just getting off the phone with GM again and we're looking at approximately 1,000,000 condensers according to GM. I suggested taking a condenser out of the vehicle that would match mine and GM said the does not possibility. Imagine the elderly with these vehicles where the condensers either failed or not failed yet. Imagine mothers who have infants or small children that will be put in the same boat. My local dealer in North Palm Beach Florida said they're waiting for at least 30 condensers. I was told that I'm looking at at least two or three months for the possibility of getting one. It's nice to have $72,000 vehicle without air conditioning for six months. I've notified my local paper and will be notifying the news to get this out there

Had condenser replaced in my '14 silverado at 69k. Cost $600 at a local garage in indianapolis. Far cry from the $1200 dealerships wanted. They also recommended I replace my radiator without even seeing my truck. I had the issue with the steering assist a year ago. They say temporary loss. Well my trucks steering wheel locked in place while turning. Service stabilitrac came up. Only way to regain steering was to stop the truck, put it in neutral, and restart. Then I could at least turn thr steering wheel again... Hmmm... At the time my dealership told me high resistance in my main power cables. I dropped $600 bucks because after asking for assistance from GM, GM said since you bought used (w/13k on it) GM could not provide any money help. After the recall, i was 100% reimbursed. Taka that however you want.

My 2015 Tahoe LTZ doesn't have air conditioning either. It stopped working at the end of May before it was even 2 years old. I've been waiting 7 weeks now and when I call GM, they act as if a new problem saying, "A senior advisor will call you within 24-48 hours." I would like for the senior advisor to drive my car with 3 kids around in a heat index of 105 for 24-48 hours. Something needs to be done. This is unacceptable!!

Had the same problem with those senior advisors, you are correct spoke with one said they will call you back a no call, so I called them and they act like you never spoke with them. It's what you would call a puppet show.

I have had 9 Chevy trucks in the past 20 years. The 2014 Silverado is the last vehicle I will purchase from GM. I have never had so many problems with a pickup truck until this one. The AC failed and had it repaired, it failed again with the same problem and now I have been waiting 6 weeks for the condenser and was told that there was no scheduled date for delivery anytime soon. Plus I can't get a refund from the Chevy dealer (Vara Chevrolet). Never again will I be purchasing any GM products.

Robert H (not verified)    August 26, 2017 - 9:57PM

Big surprise ! My A/C went out,,,bad condenser... 6 months out for a redesigned unit.... it will winter then,,,,
It's really hot here now, I'll be looking for an after market replacement, it's a 2014 with 73,000 miles
