All 2017 Dodge Challenger, Charger Hemi Cars Get Dual Mode Exhaust

After the dual mode exhaust system on the likes of the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and the Dodge Charger R/T Scat Pack has proven to be so popular, the high performance brand will make a loud, dual mode exhaust system standard on every 2017 Challenger and Charger with a Hemi V8.

When the newest Dodge Challenger and Charger were introduced in the new Scat Pack and Hellcat trimlines, they were equipped with a 2.75 inch dual mode exhaust system that allows the two Hemi engines to scream when being driven hard while being a little quieter when driving the gently. This system gives owners the high performance roar when pushing the Challenger or Charger to their limits, but when you have your car idling in the driveway – it won’t wake the neighbors a few houses away.

The sound of these exhaust systems on the 2015-2016 Dodge Challenger and Charger Scat Pack and Hellcat has become one of the favorite features among owners (after the raw power), but those folks buying the models with the 5.7L Hemi V8 have been forced to turn to the aftermarket for a similar roar over the past two model years. That changes for 2017, as every new Dodge Challenger and Charger with a Hemi engine will have the 2.75 inch dual mode exhaust.

Dual Mode Exhaust for All 2017 Hemi Muscle Cars
During the 2015 and 2016 model years, the 2.75 inch dual mode exhaust system has been standard equipment on the Dodge Challenger and Charger in R/T Scat Pack, 392 Hemi Scat Pack Shaker (Challenger only), SRT 392 and SRT Hellcat form. So every car with the 6.4L Hemi or the supercharged Hellcat Hemi have had this exhaust system for the past two model years and when the 2017 Charger Daytona 392 hits the market with the 2017 Challenger T/A 392, they will also have the dual mode exhaust system.

The big news here is that the 2017 Dodge Charger Daytona and the 2017 Dodge Challenger T/A with the 5.7L Hemi will come with the 2.75 inch dual mode exhaust, and this standard exhaust system on these performance packages will also be standard on the other 5.7L Hemi models. This means that the Challenger in R/T, R/T Plus, R/T Shaker and R/T Shaker Plus trimlines and the Charger in R/T and R/T Road & Track trimlines will get the same lovely-sounding exhaust system as the Scat Pack and Hellcat models.

How the System Works
The dual mode exhaust system in every Hemi-powered 2017 Dodge Challenger and Charger uses a pair of electronic valves located near the rear of the vehicle to control the level of the exhaust noise. At idle and in light throttle situations, the valves are in their closed position to keep sound levels down. This also helps to reduce “drone” when cruising on the highway, but when you put the hammer down, the valves open and the exhaust gets a whole lot louder.

When those valves are open, we get the beautiful roar from the Scat Pack and Hellcat Challenger and Charger, and while the 5.7L Hemi will have its own sound, it should be a great deal louder when the 2017 models with this new active exhaust system hit the street.

I am driving a 2016 Challenger 392 Hemi Scat Pack Shaker with the dual mode exhaust right now and I love how the system works – and how great the car sounds at wide open throttle. Adding this exhaust system to every Hemi model will most certainly increase the cool factor of the dueling Dodge muscle cars. The videos below offer an example of the roar of the dual model system on the Hellcat and Scat Pack Challenger.(Continue for watching the video)

In case you don't already know, you should be aware that the Tacoma area has a terrible public disturbance noise problem. I am mainly referring to the following: 1) Loud subwoofer thumping noises that are blasted through walls and into homes by vehicles and can be heard for several blocks. 2) Loud exhaust noises from vehicles with mufflers removed or with loud "sport" mufflers. 3) Loud sound systems playing inside homes that can be heard inside homes that are many houses away. 4) Fireworks exploded any random time, day or night, 365 days a year, even when no holiday is near. The people doing this are intentionally trying to harass and menace everybody in the community! This is criminal behavior and there is a serious lack of enforcement of the Pierce County Code Chapter 8.72. Loud subwoofers heard from 50+ feet away are illegal. Unmuffled or loud vehicle exhausts, are misdemeanor crimes. The law is very clear and explicit here. The residents of Pierce County do not have to accept this criminality! Please read the law and contact government officials, including law enforcement, and demand that the law be enforced! Loud low-frequency thumping in particular causes violent and explosive emotions in people. There have been many violent incidents and even killings, occurring here and around the nation, that were touched off by loud music being forced into people's homes. No wonder decent people do not want to move here, crime is high, property values are low, and criminals figure if they can get away with public disturbance, they can get away with any other crime. We do not have to accept this constant disturbance of the peace. It is illegal! The quality of life will remain low here until the residents do something about this.

Clips from the current version (2016/2017) of the Pierce County Code Chapter 8.72:
Chapter 8.72 MOTOR VEHICLE, PUBLIC DISTURBANCE, AND PUBLIC NUISANCE NOISE
8.72.040 Mufflers. It is unlawful for any person to operate, or for any owner to permit any person to operate, any motor vehicle or motorcycle upon the public highways which is not equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation.
8.72.070 Exhaust System. It shall be unlawful for any person to operate any motor vehicle upon any public highway if the vehicle exhaust system exceeds the maximum permissible sound levels set forth below for the category of vehicle, as measured at a distance of twenty inches (0.5 meter) from the exhaust outlet under procedures established by the State of Washington in Washington Administrative Code Chapter 173-58-080, "Close Proximity Exhaust System Sound Level Measurement Procedure." Motorcycles 99 dB(A)/Automobiles, light trucks, and all other motor vehicles 10,000 pounds or less 95 dB(A).
8.72.090 Public Disturbance Noises. It is unlawful for any person to cause, or for any person in possession of property to allow to originate from the property, a public disturbance noise. The following sounds are public disturbance noises:...
C. Frequent, repetitive, or continuous sounds from starting, operating, repairing, rebuilding, or testing of any motor vehicle, motorcycle, dirt bike, or other off-highway vehicle, or any internal combustion engine, within a rural or residential district, including vacant property adjacent thereto, so as to unreasonably disturb or interfere with the peace, comfort, and repose of owners or possessors of real property...
F. Any loud and raucous sound made by use of a musical instrument, whistle, sound amplifier, or other device capable of producing or reproducing sound which emanates frequently, repetitively, or continuously from any building, structure or property, such as sound originating from a band session, tavern operation, or social gathering and which unreasonably disturb or interfere with the peace, comfort, and repose of owners or possessors of real property in the area affected by such noise...
H. Public disturbance noise from portable or motor vehicle audio equipment: While in park areas, residential or commercial zones, or any area where residences, schools, human service facilities, or commercial establishments are in obvious proximity to the source of the sound, it is unlawful for any person to negligently cause, make, or allow to be made from audio equipment under such person's control or ownership the following:
1. Sound from a motor vehicle or vessel sound system, such as a tape player, radio, or compact disc player, which is operated at such a volume that it could be clearly heard by a person of normal hearing at a distance of 50 feet or more from the vehicle or vessel itself;
2. Sound from audio equipment such as a tape player, radio, or compact disc player, which is operated at such a volume that it could be clearly heard by a person of normal hearing at a distance of 50 feet or more from the source of the sound;
8.72.120 Enforcement... C. The Sections of this Chapter relating to motor vehicles and vessels and noise emanating from vehicles and vessels, shall be subject to enforcement proceedings with or without a citizen's complaint.

I don't get the stupid loud subwoofers that's just people who want attention. it you don't like living in the city and want peace and quiet move out in the country stop trying to control what other people enjoy doing just to suit your self.

What I'm not too sure of is why when you race the Scat Pack engine while in Park doesn't soumd as loud when at similar RPM's in Drive.
Is that butterfly valve in the exhaust pipe "fully open" in both scenarios?
In other words, is that only Fully Open or Fully Closed?

It's because there's no load on the engine. When it's in drive, there is a load. Hence higher compression is needed to make the engine turn and cause the car to go. Higher compression = more noise.

I rented a 2017 Challenger R/T a week ago - and I HATED the exhaust note. It is so annoyingly loud that I no longer think about trading in my 2011 Challenger R/T on a new model. I'm not a young guy (I'm 55), so maybe I just don't understand what's so great about having such a loud car. I don't want or need to broadcast to everyone that I have a powerful car - I just want the power. If there was a way to order the older-style, quieter exhaust system for the Hemi, I would perhaps consider replacing my '11 model. Until or unless that happens, I'll keep happily driving my current R/T.

You need to look at the Chrysler 300S with the 5.7 Hemi. it's quite and has almost 400HP. The new ones can be purchased for about $45k, Very comfy, luxury, soft ride, but very fast when needed, oh and RWD!! If you're in teh Chicago land area, come see me at Bettenhausen.

I’m 69. I rented an ‘18 R/T in November, 2018. I enjoyed the car. I really enjoyed the exhaust. I plan to replace my sensible ‘15 Jeep Renegade with a Challenger R/T. New or used, I will only consider models that have active exhaust.

I have a 2017 Challenger R/T with active exhaust. Is there a possibility to switch it ON or OFF so that I can choose to drive around "quiet"?
I saw modifications to switch it to "always noisy" (additional wire harness to "fool the electronics") but nothing for "quiet mode".

Cheers, JUS
