Owners of 2014 Chevrolet Silverados are hot about AC problems

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado has many drivers hot under the collar because of continual problems with the truck’s air conditioning. There are multiple forums dedicated to the same issue. Some drivers had problems right after buying their pickups. Others are suffering with sweltering temperatures right now.

One forum I checked has 19 pages of complaints dedicated to the air conditioning issues. The last post, in September of 2016, pretty well sums up the frustration. This 2014 Silverado owner says he has had to take it in for repairs every three months. “This was my first new car to me. I was planning to buy one for my daughter, but not with this track record. I just had the AC fixed 2 months ago. Today, on the way home from work, the compressor seized and the belt broke. Now it's Friday, no service centers are open, and I live in the south so it is hot and I have no AC. I was planning to take the kids out on the boat, but I am not putting them in a hot truck with no AC. This may very well be the last Chevy I ever buy.”

This owner reported his problem, in late August of 2016. “So I have a 2014 Silverado crewcab. Last year during the height of summer with my kids in the truck my ac broke. I bought this thing new in June of 2014. So I take it in and it was a broken line. I was just a hair over the 36000 miles already in a year but the service guy took care of me. Well here we are now with the temps in the 100's in San Antonio 13 months after the ac was fixed, and it's broke again. I hate this truck.”

Other drivers are reporting similar issues. What appears to be the most upsetting is that the same issues keep reoccurring. The air conditioner suddenly starts blowing warm air. The owners say the repairs take time and never fix the problem for long. “Turns out the compressor and a
hose went out on it. Warranty took care of it but I was left without a vehicle for a few days and upset that practically a new vehicle was already having issues. Got my truck back and about 2 months later guess what? You guessed, the a/c went out again and another compressor went bad.”

A check of the website that monitors complaints about all vehicles, finds that there have been 11 formal complaints made about the ongoing problems with the air conditioning on the 2014 Chevrolet Silverados.

One owner named Brad, from Little Rock, says a dealership finally levelled with him and told him what the real problem is. Brad says they told him “They have a design flaw in the metal part of the hose so we replace the hose and add a support bracket. I asked them why the 2016 models do not have the bracket and was told the a/c hose was redesigned for them and the new hose would not work on a 2014 model.” Brad is furious because he had to pay for the repair and General Motors will not reimburse him.

Another owner, from Texarkana, adds “Was told by the dealer that a bracket had broken and a hose came loose and it would be 550.00 dollars to fix. Time to change brands.”

There have not been any recalls issued for the hose and bracket problems, but it sounds like the issue is wide spread enough that dealers should be aware of the proper repairs. If you are having your AC repaired, It might help to point out all of the complaints and see if you can get it replaced under warranty, or if they will work with you on bringing down the price.

Just got off the phone with GM, they now tell me that there is an open recall with the steering assist. Now get this, when they figure out how to fix it they will let us know. They have no clue but they say it is safe to drive, reallllllllllllly. I would suggest calling GM and ask about this open recall, I have a 2014 Silverado 1500 LT.
2014 Chevrolet Silverado, 67000km. A/C compressor seized and smoked the a/c clutch and belt while wife driving. Cost me three whole lost days use of the truck and over a week to get an appointment with the local GMC garage. $1100.00 out of my pocket for a new compressor, parts and labour. Not impressed.
Karl, More good news, GM now has a recall with no ETA on fixing it and no known REMEDY. Put your vin number into GM recall section on their site. It is called loss of steering assist where the electronics go out for a few seconds then return at slower speeds causing no power steering or as they call it power assist. And get this if you were planning on trading it in with some loyalty assist from GM, that won't happen either their policy is if there is an open recall they won't help you. Here is the recall info from GM's site. GM Recall #: N172085440 NHTSA # AWAITING# Date Issued: Jun 29, 2017 Recall Title: Loss of Steering Assist Recall Description: General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2014 model year Chevrolet Silverado LD and GMC Sierra LD vehicles. These vehicles may experience a temporary loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist followed by a sudden return of EPS assist, particularly during low-speed turning maneuvers. The loss and sudden return of EPS assist typically happens within a 1 second period and is caused by an electrical/software issue. Safety Risk Description: If EPS assist is lost and suddenly returned, the driver could lose temporary control of the steering wheel, increasing the risk of a crash. Repair Description: Dealers will perform a reflash of the EPS module software. Recall Status: INCOMPLETE. REMEDY NOT YET AVAILABLE Talk about having another SAFETY ISSUE with steering, perhaps NASA can help them out.
I bought this 2014 Silverado truck from Alabama dealership in Nov 2015 with 24,000 miles on it.Since I have owned it the water pump has went bad the AC ECM went bad now today the AC line going to the condenser has cracked and leaked all the Freon out truck has 46,000 miles on it. Called customer service and complained we will see what happens.
My A/C went out at 69K miles in my 2014 Silverado 1500. Almost $1,200 later I am learning that I am not the only one with this issue. Sucks.
Cam, more issues too follow, open steering assist recall, see what they are saying.GM Recall #: N172085440 NHTSA # AWAITING# Date Issued: Jun 29, 2017 Recall Title: Loss of Steering Assist Recall Description: General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2014 model year Chevrolet Silverado LD and GMC Sierra LD vehicles. 2014 Silverado 38,000 miles out of warranty and my AC stopped working today. Called customer service and they want me to spend $125 to figure out what the problem is and then maybe they might be able to help. I traded a 98 F150 in on the silverado only because I needed 4x4. The Ford had 138,000 miles on it and still ran like new, I never had an issue with it and the AC still worked fine. I am going to get the ac fixed at a local shop and drive directly to the Ford dealer and trade it in. I will however send a photo of me and my new Ford to the CEO of GM.
Jim, but till you trade it in please drive careful. There is an open recall on the power assist, with no ETA or REMEDY TO FIX IT. Enter your vin # into the recall section on GM website. You can lose your electronic steering for a few seconds. GM hasn't notified anyone and even if they do, like I mentioned there is no REMEDY. Here is what the recall says.GM Recall #: N172085440 NHTSA # AWAITING# Date Issued: Jun 29, 2017 Recall Title: Loss of Steering Assist Recall Description: General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2014 model year Chevrolet Silverado LD and GMC Sierra LD vehicles. I own a 2015 GMC Sierra Denali truck. Same model with a faulty AC Compressor. I was told by two dealers that GMC is backordered on 20,000 of these parts. GMC will not recall because it isn't a safety issue, so doesn't meet government standards for a recall. This is complete BS. It will cost me over $1000 to fix and I have to wait 6 weeks for the part in the summer. I will not be buying another GM vehicle. This is a $20m problem that GM will not recall.
Sorry, but just got an email from the Class Action Lawyer. They said that, they have decided not to proceed with the case, so I guess GM wins again. Not sure if someone wants to call another lawyer.
Condenser needed replaced. 2015 Yukon Denali with 42,500 miles $1037. Still trying to get GM to pay for it.
I feel your pain not only are they unlikely to pay for the parts they have been on back order for months with no known ETA on availability. I reached out to the CEO Mary Barra and all staff would say is it's out of warranty. I solved my problem by trading my 2014 Silverado with only 38,000 miles on the clock in on another brand. As much as I hated to do it I went for the extended warranty just to protect myself.
I have a 2014 Chevy Silverado the AC started blowing hot air and no one can repair the AC. I have spent $330.00 to have it repaired with nothing being fixed. I am told the parts are on national back order. I am going to the dealer today to see what they say.
Dennis, while you are at the dealer or you can do it yourself put your vin # in their recall section. There is an open steering assist which you can lose temporary loss of steering at slow speeds. Get this no REMEDY didn't even mail out the post card yet alerting you to this recall. GM isn't even telling you not to drive the vehicle. How can no steering even for a split second not be a serious issue. Here is what the recall states.GM Recall #: N172085440 NHTSA # AWAITING# Date Issued: Jun 29, 2017 Recall Title: Loss of Steering Assist Recall Description: General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2014 model year Chevrolet Silverado LD and GMC Sierra LD vehicles. Add me to the list of a/c issues with my 2014 Silverado. woke up one morning to go to work and truck would only blow hot air. of course out of warranty so I'm left to ditch out the money for what seems gm should be recalling. very dissatisfied with this truck and will never but another chevy.
Add my 2014 GMC Sierra to bad condenser list. Less than 40k, dealer said I'm 5th in line waiting for a condenser from GM for this small town dealer. Always a GM guy, but GM acting more like Washington, we know about problem but doing little to fix it. Time to take my $$ elsewhere.
Add me to the rest of the air conditioning wrecks. 2014 PU. Condenser out last April. Took it to a GM service facility. He said two weeks back order. Today's date is what! Last week I called to check on any word from GM on replacement parts. Not! could be weeks or months away! It was interesting that the Manager of the service dept.and repair told me just in our little town of 20k he has a dozen GM vehicles with same issues. Nation wide it has to be in the tens of thousands. Due to the summer heat and my travel schedule I went out and rented an additional vehicle. Time for a class action law suit
I tried class action, one firm said no, doesn't mean someone else can't try a different firm.
Finally getting my 2014 Chevy Silverado A/C condenser fixed. I was on a wait list for 3 months because of a nationwide backorder. The downfall is my Silverado is just out of warranty and the repairs are costing me $1,200.00. I did contact GM customer care when the A/C originally failed, and it sounded like GM might assists with the cost, but they are not. Even though air conditioning is not a safety issue, I am sure the Freon leaking out into the atmosphere is causing some harmful problems with the environment since so many GM vehicles are impacted. Also, the average temps where I live in California are high 90's to low 100's daily. Very disappointing that GM is not backing their mistake and making additional money off loyal consumers for that mistake!
2014 Chevrolet Silverado Z71..AC is out. Damn thing is blowing hot air when you turn on the AC. Bought the truck June 2014. We travel a lot in South Texas. And if you live down here around San Antonio you know how hot it gets in July. This is total BS. GM should have a recall on their AC system for these trucks. Been a Chevrolet fan for years. We even have a 2004 Z71 4 door.. had plenty of work done on that truck too. Only had to recharge the AC in that one. Not sure if I will invest into another GM product if they don't fix their shit and help people with these problems that are going on with their vehicles. This should be a recall. Always thought Chevrolet was a stand up brand... now it makes me wonder.
Well here we are 2014 Chevy owners,, that we paid good hard earned money for ,,and GM laughs all the way to the bank ,,I to have ac issues just dropped at the dealer and heard every excuse ,,hurry up and fix the government made vehicle so I can trade it for a Ford
Just tried a 2nd class action lawyer, guess their all afraid of GM.
Yep, my 2014 GMC 5.3 finally had the lock up at 56K everyone else is having. Filed a claim with GM and now taking to the dealer tonight. I was employed GM direct for 5 years. It is sad that GM is doing nothing to rectify a known issue with these 2014 model trucks.
A/C failed at 56,000 on my 2014 GMC. The compressor locked up and stalled the engine. I almost wrecked.
Bought $52,000 2014 Silverado in 2/14. Nine recalls on nebulous incidentals. At 46,000 miles and 3 1/2 years later (note all is just beyond warranty period), A C began blowing hot air. Was advised condenser has leak. Repair at dealership to be $863. If my vehicle was the only case of leaking condenser, I would just consider it bad luck on my part. However, in view of seeing that there are thousands and thousands of 2014 Silverados with this failure, I am infuriated at G M that no recall has been issued. My wife bought 2015 Impala, but we are through with Chevrolet and G M. I plan to give Chevrolet a lot of free advertisement out of this.
add me to the list AC blowing hot so I took it to local shop, no use in using the dealer my 2014 has 57000 miles and out of warranty. Guy couldn't believe it compressor had literally ruptured almost in half and belt was gone ripped to shreds. So he replaced with GM parts and now it starts up and hi side pressure jumps way up and the clutch starts screaming, apparently some thing in the condenser is partially blocked and no parts are available.
Sorry, forgot one a Dodge
Add my 2014 Silverado with less than 35K miles on it to the list.
I have a 2014 Silverado I bought new. Now with 56000 miles AC is blowing hot air! Again. Have had it looked at twice & thought repaired twice. Now again a week later. Stuck in traffic on I-75 downtown Atlanta, 96degrees! Unbelievable, can't trust this truck any more.
GM Survey, what vehicle will you buy next, GM,GMC, Ford, Toyota, Nissan, Honda.
