2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF Launch Edition Sold Out

The Mazda MX-5 Miata RF Launch Edition went fast.

Mazda has sold all of the 1,000 Launch Editions of the 2017 MX-5 Miata RF hardtop convertible. Torque News alerted our readers to the pre-order deadlines, and one of our readers was kind enough to follow up with a comment that they were able to secure one. Another reader was waitlisted.

Mazda originally opened up the 2017 MX-5 Miata RF to a select group of loyal Mazda Miata owners. This writer, the former owner of an NC 2007 Grand Touring Miata, was not included in that select group of Miata fans. The rumor is that to be included one must have had multiple Miatas and still be a current owner.

That allocation of about 500 Launch Edition cars sold out in about a week. Mazda then opened up the Launch Edition pre-ordering process to the general public. The remaining 500 cars sold out in 13 hours. This may seem like a very fast sale, and it is, but the 2016 ND Miata Launch Edition sold out even faster last year.

Those who wanted a Launch Edition will be happy to hear that the Grand Touring and Club trims of the MX-5 Miata RF are now planned for production in early 2017. These new models will differ in their construction from the soft-top Miata by having a 4.6-inch full-color TFT gauge standard and the availability of Machine Gray Metallic paint in substitution of Meteor Gray Mica that is available on the soft top.

I was offered the Miata rf and within 15 minutes of the email notification I ordered it. Like to think I was in the top 10.

Can't wait for this baby to arrive. It will be a collectible for sure!!

Hi guys,

My Miata rf arrived a few days ago and it's amazing! I feel like I'm part of the road with every turn. The interior is very comfortable and I can't stop people from asking me questions.

Just thought you would like to know everything they said was true about how great this car is

Actually I do know someone. My uncle has owned multiple Miata's and currently owns a mint condition 2006 that I couldn't get him to sell me. When this RF model came out he was nice enough to pre-order for me so I could buy it. I tried to do it last year with a 2016 models but I didn't make the cut; so I wasn't taking any chances this year. And I'm so happy it worked out the way it did.
Anyways, I was able to make the cut for the open to the public. He has not canceled his yet and is debating to go ahead and buy another one

Same here! I love the MX-5 I currently drive, but this one is more special. I can't wait! I ordered mine the second the pre-order was open at 9 am on 9/26. I guess we were lucky. My dealer told me that lots of people wanted one but were unable to order it in time.

Well, two days before Christmas the Sales Manager from Tom Bush Miata here in JAX called, I had driven up to meet Brett Sanders back in October to introduce myself and to alert him that my MX-5 RF was coming in. Brett is a great guy and he informed me that two of the limited editions were coming to the dealership. One was for me but one of the first was coming in was reserved for a customer who had owned 4 or so Miatas in the past.

Anyway, that buyer was going through some changes and did not know if he could take the RF coming in and was given 24 hours to commit further. At the end of the day, we switched cars as he thought that his situation would be more clear by Feb or so. I drove up to Tom Bush on 12/23 and paid cash for the car.

From the moment I left with my car, with my son in law in tow, I knew I had something very special.

This is my 61 Bugeye, my 63 Sprite, my 57 MGA, my 71 TR6, my 74 MGB, my 58 MGA, and my 68 MGB but much better. It is responsive.........it is cool. I have operated the folding hardtop for at least 6 Miata owners who were in awe and for another 3-4 interested parties.

I have 190 miles on this car and just love it. All of you will feel the same and I hope that the party to who this was originally spoked for will be able to take possession of mine.

Vroom, Vroom

Hi Andrew,

I don't think anyone would have that info except Mazda; I certainty don't. I can't imagine that all 1000 buyers are going to come follow up. I would contact Mazda directly and let them know you want to be notified if people drop out. Will keep you advised.

Good Luck

Rich

Drove my RF home at the beginning of a snow storm 12/31. Looking forward to driving my "baby" once the ice melts....

I just got a call from Corporate today that I'm off the wait list and am now available to get a launch edition. Whew Whoo!! I'm 5 months pregnant so hoping to get it in time to enjoy it before the baby comes or I get too big to drive it :D I'm so excited esp since I didn't think the launch editions were going to be ready until March!! I had a 2008 grand touring which I sold...one of the few regrets in my life
Anyone have any surprises, good or bad since you've received yours??

I have an Launch Edition (manual of course) coming to Philly that I'm 99% sure I won't be able to take. Anyone still interested let me know I'll try to get you in before I cancel the order.

Hi Pete,

There is someone else on this thread that might be interested. Take a look above.

Too bad I can't afford another one. They are fantastic!

I put my watch in a safe place because it' adds value to the whole car. We now have collector car and it should be kept for a very long time!!!
