20 New 2018 WRX/STI Improvements Announced by Subaru

The 2018 Subaru WRX and WRX STI performance cars get significant upgrades. Here’s twenty new upgrades announced by Subaru.

Subaru has announced new upgrades for the 2018 WRX and WRX STI performance sedans. There’s twenty new upgrades for the 2018 MY that significantly improve the performance models. Here’s the complete rundown of the new features.

It starts on the outside with the 2018 WRX/STI getting new front facia styling that features a more pronounced grille design, along with a larger lower grille opening. It further sets the performance models apart from the new 2017 Impreza compact design. WRX Limited and all WRX STI models feature redesigned LED Steering Responsive Headlights to illuminate curves at night. All WRX and STI models now feature new roof rack mounting brackets for snowboards, bicycles and cargo carriers.

There’s no changes to the WRX 2.0-liter engine or the STI’s 2.5-liter turbo boxer, but both models get significant suspension upgrades. Both models get new front and rear suspension tuning for improved steering stability and Subaru says improved ride comfort that doesn’t change the car’s cornering performance.

WRX upgrades

The WRX gets enhanced shifter feel for the 6-speed manual gearbox, with a new synchro design and reduced friction, along with smoother clutch take-up. The WRX electric power steering (EPS) has been revised for a smoother, “more natural feel.” Engineers integrated the steering motor and electronic control unit to reduce weight. WRX also gets a new optional Performance Package for the WRX Premium that now features Recaro 8-way power performance seats, red-painted brake calipers and upgraded JURID brake pads. The moonroof has been deleted to reduce weight. The standard 18-inch wheels feature a new double-spoke design.

WRX STI upgrades

The 2018 STI gets a revised DCCD AWD system. The DCCD system now uses electronic control for quicker and smoother response. Subaru says it also comes with significantly upgraded brakes and the model’s first-ever 19-inch wheels. The 19-inch alloy wheels feature a Y-shaped spoke design and are wrapped in 245/35R19 high-performance tires.

Subaru also upgraded the Brembo Performance Brake System that now uses stronger monoblock 6-piston calipers in front, monoblock 2-piston calipers in the rear and larger, drilled rotors all around for better heat dissipation. Also, new brake pads provide greater surface area for improved braking feel and fade resistance. The STI also offers Recaro performance seats (standard on STI Limited, optional for base trim).

Improvements inside

Inside, both WRX and WRX STI get upgraded interior materials, rear seat armrest with cup holders, redesigned interior door grips and faster remote trunk opening. To reduce interior noise, WRX/STI now include thicker door glass, revised door sealing and a foam-filled windshield header beam. Both models also get a larger high-definition multi-function display (5.9-inch vs. 4.3-inch before). More on Page 2.

Improved safety

Engineers also revised the front structure of the 2018 Subaru WRX and WRX STI for enhanced frontal collision performance. When equipped with EyeSight, WRX Limited, now features Vehicle Hold (AVH), and a new EyeSight Assist Monitor (EAM). The EAM uses LED indicators to display EyeSight status and alerts on the windshield, allowing the driver to see them without diverting eyes from the road. The AVH feature replaces the Hill Holder and Hill Start Assist functions now holding the vehicle on all road grades, not only inclines.

There’s at least twenty new upgrades coming on the 2018 Subaru WRX and WRX STI performance sedans. Models will begin arriving at Subaru showrooms this spring.
