Ford Could be Working on a New Mustang Mach 1

A video has been captured showing what some believe could be the new Ford Mustang Mach 1 and while we don’t have anything concrete on this possible future trimline, rumors suggest that it will bridge the performance gap between the Mustang GT and the Shelby GT350.

As is always the case with articles based on rumors or unofficial information, I want to point out that there has been nothing from Ford Motor Company to suggest that they are working on a new Mustang Mach 1. However, I have heard rumors in the past about a new Mach 1 and this time, our friends at Mustang 6g have now captured what they believe could be a new Mach 1 test mule on video.

The Mysterious Mustang – Maybe Mach 1
There has long been a rumor that this generation of the Ford Mustang would reintroduce the Mach 1 trimline. In the past, the Mach 1 package has been a sort of higher performance version of the Mustang GT and if the Mach 1 arrives in the form that we expect, it will offer slightly better performance than the new Mustang GT, but slightly lighter performance than the Shelby GT350.

Rumors suggest that the newest Mustang Mach 1 will be based on the Mustang GT with the 5.0L V8, but it is expected that the Mach 1 Coyote V8 will offer slightly more power than the engine in the Mustang GT. The car in the video below has a quad tip exhaust system and that, combined with a free flowing intake system and an engine tune could increase the output of the 5.0L V8 from 435hp and 400lb-ft of torque to something slightly higher – perhaps something in the 450-460hp range. In other words, enough to challenge the Camaro 1LE with the LT1 V8 and 455hp.

Next up, the next Mach 1 is expected to have a revised suspension system and bigger brakes, and while we cannot see the brakes of the Mustang in the video, we can see that the wheels and tires appear to sit a little tighter in the wheelwells than those on the “regular” Mustang GT – meaning that it could have something as simple as a Ford Racing suspension package or it could have the Shelby’s MagneRide damper system. The Shelby suspension might be optimistic, but the Ford Racing suspension setup is an easy add-on to improve the performance of the Mustang GT, so when coupled with unique wheels and tires, the new Mach 1 could handle significantly better than the GT…while still leaving plenty of room for the Shelby to run the paddock.

Finally, the mysterious Mustang in the video appears to have a more aggressive front chin spoiler and a low profile decklid spoiler, both of which seem like sensible expectations for a new Mach 1 package.

Really, all that is missing from this Ford Mustang to make it a lock for the new Mach 1 is a Shaker-style hood scoop, but with the Chrysler Group offering the Shaker as a trimline for the Challenger, Ford might need to come up with a more trademark-friendly hood design for the new Mach 1.

If it is a real thing, of course.

Should more information surface on a new Mustang Mach 1, you will find it here on TorqueNews.com, but in the meantime, check out the video of this mysterious Mustang test car and tell us what you think it is in the comments below!

I don't understand why Ford wouldn't put the Magnaride suspension on the Mustang GT, what is the point of keeping that exclusive to the GT350 - the GT350's allure besides the nameplate is the 5.2 FPC motor. If any model in the Mustang line-up should have a magnaride damper it's the GT, IMO.

Couldn't agree more Steve, Gord has really dropped the ball with new mustang. Low power, crappy power bands with no power above 5500-6500 rpm, dull LED DRL's, soft suspension, more weight, still puny gas tank, and power rated on 93 octane, the ONLY manufacturer to rate their power on 93 octane, which we don't have in many places out west of the Mississippi. Only 91.

10 grand for maybe 20 extra horsepower and some badges? no thanks. I owned a 2004 mach1 mustang and although only rated at 40 more horsepower than the GT at the time, it put down much more than that when it came to a dyno. I'm glad I didn't wait for this car and bought my 15 GT premium. simple programmer, intake and exhaust and I netted more than this car claims. I hope as a mach 1 enthusiast, that Ford does more than this.
