GM recalls the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze for steering, trans issues

The Chevrolet Cruze has quickly become one of the top-selling cars in America and to help keep it selling strong, GM is taking no chances with safety issues so the company has issued its second recall of the year for the compact sedan – this time over a possible issue with the steering assembly and transmission linkage.

General Motors points out that while they have announced this new 2011 Chevy Cruze recall, they are doing so without actually receiving any complaints or problems, accidents or injuries from the consumer world to themselves or to the NHTSA. It seems that GM came across something about the intermediate steering shaft covers that they feel could cause a problem and before even a single real-world customer has encountered a problem, GM is calling back 154,112 2011 Cruze sedans. General Motors hasn’t given any explanation as to what is wrong with the steering shaft covers but depending on the problem, when those covers fail they can cause premature wear of the components intended to be shielded from debris and the elements.

In addition to the recall to inspect the intermediate steering shafts, GM has announced a recall running along with the first one that pertains only to Chevy Cruze sedans with an automatic transmission. This second recall, which affects 120,295 Cruze sedans, is based around the proper installation of the transmission shift linkage.

Since GM bundled the two recalls together, anyone with an automatic transmission-equipped 2011 Chevy Cruze will have both inspections done at once. There has not been a clear timeline given as to when this recall begin but once it does, all inspections and repairs needed will performed free of charge to the customer.

In early April, GM announced the first recall of the 2011 Chevy Cruze, as roughly 2,100 models were fitted with steering wheel assemblies that may not have been installed correctly. In that case, there was one accident reported where the steering wheel separated while the vehicle was moving but no injuries were reported from that incident.

Dear Sir,

On January 10th, 2010 our Daughter Kelly Erin Ruddy 21 yrs. old was killed in a car accident. We received a Recall Notice from GM in April 2010 on the car a 2005 Chevy Cobalt for Power steering failure. The Recall involves removing entire power steering mechanism built by a partially owned Toyota factory. I knew the minute I got the news that my daughter was killed so violently and that it did not involve another car that it had to be mechanical failure.

It was too late to save our Daughter Kelly but not too late to save others, I contacted GM who sent three representatives to the Coparts Scrap Yard in Duryea where the Cobalt was stored in July to investigate the car accident. A photographer, an accident Reconstructionist and a mechanical engineer that flew in from Detroit, the objective was to remove the black box, computer from the car and analyze the data. We went to the scrap yard and for the first time saw the wreckage that was once a beautiful red sports car. All the windows including the sun roof were blown out, the Cobalt had flipped, rolled, ejecting Kelly on to the highway where she was run over. We are not sure if Kelly was killed on impact. The Cobalt burst into flames melting the instrument panel, shift, upholstery.

At the Coparts Scrap Yard in Duryea, myself and my husband Kelly’s father saw the car for the first time the Cobalt told the story of an extremely violent wreck. I was told by Mr. Patrick Burley that I would know the results from the Black Box Data the next day. When I tried to contact GM through Mr. Burley, Miss Blank that they would not communicate with our family. GM has my property and they will not release the data without us providing proof that the car was defective. This is not possible since they took the most valuable piece of information from the car.

I am writing you because I want the world to know what GM has done to my family. We trusted them and we were lied to. GM is a multimillion dollar car company and this is how they handle a recall.

Thank you,

Mary Theresa and Leo Ruddy, Parents of Kelly Erin Ruddy 1810 Academy Street. Scranton, PA 18504

My 2011 Chevy Cruze LT windows stopped working today. The mirrors also stopped working. I took it in immediately to Chevy and they have had it for a week, and are now telling me they have called the Chevy Engineers.... because they are unsure what is wrong with the car. They replace the whole window module, and still no luck. They also told me they were fixing 2 recall issues.

I did research before I bought a Cruze in Feb of this year and believed what I read. The mileage was very poor, only 17-20 mpg in the city. I took it in to see if there was a problem since I was not getting anywhere near the promised mpg. I was told that it might not get that kind of advertised mileage until about 10,000 mi. Not very optimistic about that.
Then the stablili trac light came on ,affecting the steering. Took it back in and was told that they had never heard of that happening on the Cruze. That took 4 days to repair. The day after I picked it up, the stabili trac light and ABS lights came on. Then they would go off, then on. I took it back on 5/23 and now on 6/21 I still do not have my car back. The parts are unavailable, can't find any of those parts anywhere in the country, or arrive with bent pins. Now the set has arrived and the newest situation is the 'yaw control'. All three of these parts work together and are advertised as the best addition to car safety since the 3 point seat belts.
The place that I purchased my car from is being very good about providing a rental with no hassle. The mechanic seems to be straight forward and honest and I really can't fault the dealership for a faulty produced car.
I have lost over a month of service from Sirius radio and OnStar services with navigation. Those were both selling features that I have not been able to get full use of.
I would not recommend this car to anyone. Extremely disappointed.

Hi Lorraine,
Just want to share the same frustration as to my 2011 Cruze-1.8lit-Automatic
as far has the fuel consumption not as advertise on the car window HWY-50mi/gal
Reality 36 mil/gal and on top of that I dont know if you notice but from a dead stop if you press the gas pedal slowly you get a 2-3 second delay same when de-accelarating and re -accelarating ...This is know as a Flat Spot...GM is aware of the problem but in denial stage.
This is getting to be a Safey Issue which could cause an Accident..I almost had one because of this malfunction.

6 Millions Kil of testing the Vehicule.... Ya Right !!!

Keep in Touchj

These S.B. > should be "Pursued" for Misadvertising !!!

Actually the Chevrolet Cobalt family is plagued with power steering problems. The car will intermittently lose power assist. These cars have had this problem since its introduction in 2005. Sad thing is the recall says to only bring your car in for inspection after it has happened. Kinda hard to do when your severely injured or worse. Next ting is GM replaces the whole steering column with another one that is going to have the same problems down the road. It comes from China as a whole assembly. To top it all off the Cobalt family has very poor crash test results - one of the worst compact car scores.

Andrea (not verified)    July 22, 2011 - 5:16AM

That's very sad but we call entirely blame to chevy, there may be any other mistakes which you have overlooked.

Alex (not verified)    August 11, 2011 - 9:32AM

You dont eject from a car unless you're not wearing a seat belt. If you lose power assist you can still steer, just not as easily. Cobalt does not have a poor safety rating unless you get the bare bones, which is mostly for cheap fleet vehicles. Used a Cobalt for driving instruction and it was great.

General Motor is Misleading customers with there Fuel Consumption stickers .

Example : 2011 Cruze-1.8 Lit. Auto.

Advertise 5.6L/km= 50/mi.gal. Reality 36/mi/ga @ 100 km/hr.

They say this Adv. may vary..... This is more than a Variation it a Ripe-Off.

Check other complaints comment on the Internet and you will soon find its a common issue.

Also a very important matter "All the Cruze have a Flat Spot when you accelarate and vise-versa. Known as an Hesitation 2-3 seconds delay on the gas pedal.

Do yourself a favor Rent one for a week before Buying !

WORST CAR EVER!!!! We bought a 2011 cruze LT1 1.4 turbo automatic in July... CAN WE AY DEATH TRAP... It was bad enough the windshield fell out of the car three days after buying it, but then we almost got sideswiped because the car wouldn't move. then the car lunged forward in PARK, and caused me to crack my head on the steering wheel. GM denies all problems with the Car... I Hope to god someone sues GM.... I know I am about to....

Jean (not verified)    November 4, 2011 - 11:55PM

Bought my first Chevy Cruze 2011 1.4 L Turbo in March . Have 14,000 miles on it with no problems. Have been getting good gas mileage on the highway , up to 4 MPG on flat land and not exceeding the posted speed limit by much. We live in the mountains, so only get 29 MPG, but this car has more power and drives like a charm for a small car. Far more comfortable than the Chevy Cavalier, not as luxurious as my Suburban !! Just bought a second Chevy Cruze 2012 1.4 L turbo and hope to have nothing but good luck with it also !!
Would recommend to anyone !!!

Hi Jean,
Just for your Info your Cruze is suppose to give you 54m/gal / HWY so at 40 m/gal you are away from your Goals.
Maybe because of driving a Suburban which is more of a Gas Guzzler , your automatic reaction is this car is Economical ???
One good feature at least , you haven't had any problem with the car.

Jean (not verified)    November 7, 2011 - 5:57PM

Hi Gilles,
Just for your info. I do have the manual to this car and the 1.4 L automatic eco is only rated for 39 MPG . The manual transmission is rated for 42 MPG. Don't know where you get your numbers. Definitely a sigh of relief when you trade a 2007 Mazda Cx-7 in at the dealers !! Don't ever buy one of those !!! Of course Chevy isn't the only one that makes these claims on estimated MPG !! We all know the sticker on the window has alot of variables in it, if you don't you are fulling yourself !!! Will stand by GM product !! And yes I am very glad that neither my 2011 or my 2012 Chevy Cruze has problems !!!
