2012 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Unveiled At Chicago Auto Show

At the 2011 Chicago Auto Show, Volkswagen has just taken the covers off of the new 2012 Volkswagen Jetta GLI, which one hopes will spice up a, seemingly dull, German sedan.

The 2012 Volkswagen Jetta GLI was shown at the Chicago Auto Show and one hopes that it will liven up a sedan that just isn’t as good as the previous generation. Luckily, that might happen, as this new GLI is packed full of new toys and a new 2.0-liter turbocharged engine.

Living under the hood of the new Jetta GLI will be a turbocharged four-cylinder, as previously stated, that will put out 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. That engine is connected to a six-speed manual transmission that will send the power to the front wheels.

While that might not seem like a substantial power upgrade, the Jetta GLI also features a fully-independent sport suspension, an electronically-controlled XDS cross differential system and four-wheel disc brakes. All this should improve the driving characteristics of the Jetta that weren’t that bad in the first place.

The cabin of the 2012 Jetta GLI will feature sport bucket seats and a flat-bottomed leather wrapped steering wheel with red stitching. Thankfully, the GLI has been fitted with soft touch plastics, instead of the rock hard stuff used in the base sedan.

The Volkswagen Jetta GLI will also feature a 6.5-inch touchscreen with premium VIII radio and Fender Premium Audio. Other features include keyless entry and a push-button start.

The exterior of the Jetta GLI will remain the same except for a few small details, such as 17- or 18-inch wheels, smoked taillights and dual exhaust tips. Still, why does one feel like this just isn’t good enough? I guess hoping for more power, such as 225 or 250 horses won’t do much good, but it sure would make the GLI ten times better.
