2012 Audi R8 GT Gets A Price

Audi has announced the starting price for the 2012 R8 GT that was shown at the Paris Motor Show and it certainly isn't cheap by any stretch of the imagination.

Audi has just priced the new 2012 R8 GT at $196,800, which puts it in the firing range of the Ferrari 458 Italia. Add in the $1,250 destination charge and that price soars above the $200,000 mark.

The ultimate 2012 R8 GT was shown at the Paris Motor Show for the first time and it will sit on the top of the R8 range like a track-bred trophy. It will use Audi’s 5.2-liter V10 for power, while the overall body weight was reduced by around 200 pounds.

Although the weight was reduced, Audi decided to keep their classic all-wheel drive system. The Quattro system delivers the power to the wheels with a 15 percent front and 85 percent rear split. If needed, the system can send 30 percent of the power to the front.

To achieve that weight drop, Audi used thinner glass in the front, with the bulkhead between the passenger cell and engine compartment and the window in the rear hatch being replaced by a lightweight polycarbonate. These measures reduced the weight by 20 pounds, while a fixed rear wing dropped it by another 2.65 pounds.

Living under the hood is that 5.2-liter V10 that puts out 560 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque. All that power will help the R8 GT get to 62 miles per hour in just 3.6 seconds and it will top out at around 199 miles per hour.

Under the R8 GT will be 19-inch, twin five-spoke wheels with a Y design that are finished in a titanium color. As for body colors, the R8 will come in Samoa Orange metallic, Suzuka Gray metallic, Ice Silver metallic and Phantom Black pearl.

If you’re looking to buy a 2012 Audi R8 GT you better act fast, as only 333 will be made in total. Out of that, only 90 will come to the United States.
