New Next-Generation Subaru BRZ-Toyota GR86 Details You May Not Like

There is more news out of Japan about the next-generation Subaru BRZ-Toyota GR86. You may not like the latest scoop.

There are more reports coming out of Japan about the next-generation Subaru 
BRZ and Toyota GR86 sports coupe. The twins are finally getting a remodel after being around since 2012 but it may not be what performance fans wanted. There were earlier reports saying the two-door sports cars would get a new 2.4-liter turbocharged engine, the same powerplant from the Ascent and Outback models. But a new report from BestCarWeb in Japan says the second-generation BRZ/GR86 will get the bigger FA24 engine but it will not be turbocharged.

This will be a disappointment for performance fans who were hoping for a turbocharged BRZ/GR86. But the report says the sports coupes will get a naturally aspirated version of the FA24 Subaru Boxer that powers the Ascent and Outback models in the U.S. market.

BestCarWeb says the new models will have 220 PS and 240 Nm from the non-turbo FA24 engine, figures that translate to 217 horsepower and 177 lb-ft, a bump up from the current 205 horsepower and 156 lb-ft of torque. Both models will still get a 6-speed manual gearbox but a new eight-speed automatic could be replacing the current 6-speed transmission.

There is more news about the new sports cars. The coupe will keep the same dimensions as the previous generation but it will not ride on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) as was previously reported, and it will keep its current platform. The cars will not get the Subaru Global Platform which all other all-wheel-drive Subaru models now have, because a source close to the Japanese automaker says it cannot be converted to rear-drive.

One big influencer of the next generation BRZ-GR86 is Subaru’s goal to reduce traffic accidents and its continued use of EyeSight driver assist technology to be used in all models. The second generation Subaru BRZ model will come with more advanced safety features.

The next generation of 2021Subaru BRZ-Toyota GR86 sport coupes will be identical except for badging and a few exterior trim differences. Subaru and Toyota are expected to sell the last first-generation models this year and the new models will be introduced in Japan next March (2021). But the models could be delayed because of the COVID-19 global pandemic affecting production and parts supply. Stay tuned.

No surprise there. Anyone who really thought they were adding a half later and a turbo clearly doesn't understand this cars design, segment, or point.
The 86 twins will never be a turbo. It's been days so many times by the engineers.
Any "motor something something" website claiming otherwise is just a rumour mill. These kinds of rumors have been out since the car released in 2012.

Cans someone explain to me how a platform designed for longitudinal engines/longitudinal transmissions, and awd w/ a rear differential can't be converted to rear wheel drive? I mean the brz is currently on the old impreza platform. It sounds like all you have to do is remove the front axles.

I honestly believe this is just fine. As long as the car remains light weight, or even drops a few pounds. That's enough power and torque to have a great time...also it will have the proper responsiveness being N/A, and be more reliable. There was no chance they were going to let it approach the 240 HP of the base supra.

I found this to be not that bad of a news, I think superchargers work much better than turbo chargers. I am planning to get it, use it as stock or with few mods till under warranty then add supercharger.

If you understand this car, this is nothing but good news.

Same platform means same handling dynamics - WIN. Be very very glad you're not getting a Camry under the sheet metal.

Getting rid of the FA20 was already a win. That engine was garbage. 2.4 boxer means you still get low slung, balanced, high revving power delivery, except now it doesnt have a $#!+ torque curve. Best part? Keeping it NA lets YOU pick the Turbo Charger and tune instead of paying for one you'll just replace anyway.

Didnt need that much power? I mean, if you're cool with a zero to 60 over 6 seconds on a "sports car", then you dont have to pay for forced induction or worry about reliability - WIN!

As a current BRZ owner I think this is great news. The immediate response of that engine and shifting at just north of 7200 rpm is something that is getting more and more rare in these days of turbocharged engines. Now if only they can do anything about that torque dip...

What are you talking about NA option is much better for linear power, there aren't many cars without a turbo these days, it's a goddamn blessing.

It may not be a full redesign but it’s not all bad news. After all they are addressing the shortcomings of current car by adding a little torque and updating interior. If the weight and price stays the same it could be a blast to drive and a great value.
