Subaru Corporation recently announced they will build a dedicated all-electric model plant by 2027 and begin manufacturing new EV models as they ramp up battery-electric production in the next five years. What will be Subaru’s next EV after the 2023 Solterra Compact SUV?

Subaru says they will design their models and won’t rely on Toyota to collaborate on its next all-wheel-drive EVs. Subaru will build a dedicated EV factory on the site of its Oizumi plant, which now makes engines and transmissions. We recently showed a Solterra EV compact pickup, and now our friend Mike Nichoson designed a new 2024 Subaru Outback that Subaru of America needs to offer customers.

Subaru will manufacture the new all-electric all-wheel-drive vehicles for U.S. customers and global markets. Subaru CEO Tomomi Nakamura said recently they are still contemplating what kind of segment or models the upcoming EVs will be and did not offer a production capacity figure for the new EV production facility. He said they would start small with room to expand over time, a report from Automotive News said.

We think the 2024 Subaru Outback EV pictured here would be a good place for Subaru Corporation to start. The Outback is now Subaru of America’s top-selling model in the all-wheel-drive lineup. The Outback leads Forester and Crosstrek in sales in the first five months of 2022.

What can U.S. customers expect in the next five years?

Subaru says by 2025; it will begin introducing its next-generation hybrid models based on gasoline-electric powertrains provided by Toyota, similar to the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid. Customers can expect Forester, Outback, and Ascent hybrid SUVs by 2025.

Subaru could label the new hybrids e-Boxers, like they do in Japan, Australia, and Europe. Subaru said it would invest $2.05 billion in the new hybrid and electric vehicle initiatives over the next five years.

As both an EV owner (Chevy Bolt) and an Outback owner, I applaud Subaru for finally jumping in with both feet, but I'm not sure they're ready for such a heavy lift by themselves. An Outback designed primarily as an EV would be ideal, but we've taken our Outback on road trips where the EV infrastructure is still very weak (around Glacier NP, for example), so having a PHEV or range-extender option would probably make more sense until the energy density/$ gets a little higher. A car the size of an Outback would need at least an 80 kWh pack (probably closer to 100) to get close to the kind of range current owners expect, and a pack that size at today's prices would be prohibitively expensive. So, I'm curious to see how they end up solving this issue. PHEV certainly works well enough for the RAV4 Prime, so that would be my bet. In fact, I'm surprised that there is still no Outback hybrid option.

I don't want an all-electric Outback. I want a plug-in hybrid Outback. I've been set on buying an Outback as my next vehicle for a couple of years now, but lately I have been intrigued by the Hyundai PHEV Tucson. If Subaru could just give me an Outback like that!

I agree! We have a Subaru Outback 2020 model. We really want a plug in hybrid for cost effectiveness, so we are currently looking at the Kia Sportage Plug In Hybrid. However, we are devoted Subaru owners and would most certainly choose Subaru over Kia if this model were available.

Why is Subaru going full blast with EV? A more practical option would be Hybrids.

Electric Outback 350 miles plus per charge with solar panel roof. And inverter built in.

I currently am driving my 6th Outback and am delighted to hear about an electric Outback being available in 2024. I’ve been following news on the Soltera, but am disappointed it’s range is only 210 miles. I’m hoping future ranges will be 320/350 miles which most other electric cars. Keep me of updates on the Outback. Thank you

The EV charging infrastructure out where I drive my Outback is near non-existing. Furthermore, EV charging takes quite a bit more time than filling up with gas. Standing around a charging station in the middle of nowhere waiting for the EV to charge up can get old very quickly. Given how I use my Outback, a hybrid or even a PHEV, makes a lot more sense. I was actually seriously considering getting the Crosstrek Hybrid, but was told it was unavailable here in Minnesota. Around town is a different matter. My EV holds enough charge for a typical day driving around town, and I can charge it up overnight at home. But I'd never drive my EV to where my Outback takes me to.

I would totally love a 2024 Outback EV as long as it had 350 miles of range with a few passengers, gear, and a hitch mount bike rack. Come on Subaru - you can do it! Love (which has EV in it) is what makes Subaru! :)

I would love to see a non plug in Hybrid. I have a RAV4 Hybrid and get 40MPG without ever having to worry about plugging it in.

If you live in a densely populated city without permanent assigned parking, an apartment or condo, an old house, travel for days at a time or in the sparsely populated areas of the country the plug in option is severely limited, thereby reducing its functional value to that of a mere novelty.

If they do go with an old school hybrid it would be beneficial to increase the battery size and improve the chemistry. My battery never seems to get me out of the parking lot before the systems jumps out of electric only mode. I have not driven the new Jeep 4xe, but it looks promising on several levels...aside from the ridiculous price and weak overall fuel economy.

It would be interesting to see if the Boxer can be optimized to run a hybrid setup.

I own an Outback and do like it - and would really like to have an EV Outback with high end interior features. But, it all depends on the mile range. It's got to be over 250. Saw an ad for a new not yet available Chevy Blazer claiming 350 mi/charge. That would be awesome! So hope it happens.

Would love to have a plug-in Hybrid Outback. Love my current Outback, but no longer live 20 mpg. Looking at the RAV4 Prime, but if Subaru can get a hybrid Outback within a year, then I’ll wait!!

Just bought a 2023 new Impreza, waiting on it to be delivered. The second an electrified outback comes out in trading my Impreza in, for the an EV outback in a heartbeat. An electric outback is my ultimate dream car!!!!! So sad my 2011 outback just died, was upside down on on that loan so a brand new outback was out of my reach. Hopefully you come out with the electric outback ASAP, so I can trade in my Impreza with as low mileage as possible. Please please please make an all electric outback sooner for the United States. I don't want a hybrid, EV EV EV OUTBACK!!!!!!!!

If a plug-in Hybrid Outback becomes available, I would stand in line to buy it. I was a Volvo 240 driver for twenty years , then became a Toyota owner but would much prefer the all wheel drive Hybrid Outback here in upstate NY.

I own Outback now and owned Impreza in the past. My next dream car will be Outback plug-in hybrid with battery only range >70 miles since I drive 40 miles to office each way (total 80 miles). I also love to have EV Outback if it had range >380 miles per charge.

I own a 2018 Outback now. I will buy Outback again if Subaru make Outback plug-in hybrid with battery only range about 80 miles. I will also consider Outback EV if its range >400 miles/charge. I will not consider EV Subaru with range less than 320 mils/charge.

I'm so happy with my Outback 2020 that I cannot imagine driving anything else with my family. If Subaru comes out with a EV Outback, I'll be among the first in line. Please, Subaru, make one.

I have a 2022 Crosstrek PHEV. I have been happy with its ability to stay on all-electric power for my daily driving. I regularly get 800-1000 miles of actual driving per ~10.5 gallon fillup of gas. It is able to reach 65mph on electric-only, and I do see that most of the time, but it does depend on a somewhat relaxed approach to the accelerator pedal. Aggressive lane changes at highway speeds do cause the gas engine to kick in. Transition between EV and gas mode is generally very smooth.

It's been a great car for the era of $6 gas.

Having said all that, the 17-mile all-electric range is probably more like 12 in really hot weather with the A/C running steadily, and it is only working for me because I don't have a long commute.

I think a Subaru Crosstrek or Outback PHEV with the usual AWD capabilities and a range more like 40-60 miles (more comparable to the RAV4 Prime) would be a super-attractive car, more so than the pure EV - it's sort of inherent in wanting at least one AWD in the family that you are also intending to take it into remote (no charger) areas from time to time.

I have the Crosstrek on a lease; I would swap it in a heartbeat for a car like that at the end of the lease. Subaru USA, take note.

I have to laugh when my Subaru dealer sends me email offerings on trading in my low mileage well maintained 2015 Outback for basically the same car at today's prices. If they had an Outback plug in hybrid with 40-50 mile range, I probably would consider buying one, but suspect by the time they get around to offering one I will have bought from another manufacturer because Subaru will likely miss their targets and it won't show up until 2027. Crosstrek doesn't have the required range and it doesn't suit my needs. Another note to Subaru USA, see the above comments, you are leaving money on the table

1st.: 1995 Forester We went every were there was a road in that "baby shoe looking car"
2nd.: 2003 Legacy (The wife's car)
3rd.: 2012 Outback (226K miles and STILL runs oh so smoothly. Will be handing it off to my son)
4th.: 2018 Impreza (My daughter's college graduation gift)
5th.: Placed an order for a 2023 Outback Onix Ed. / XT that is being built

Just bought a 2023 VW ID.4 and LOVE it! But our second car is still my 2012 outback. Approaching 200K would buy one in EV format in a heartbeat even if I had to wait a year. Charging infrastructure is growing rapidly.

I am in the market for a new hybrid now. I love my Outback but the gas mileage is poor. Unfortunately, I cannot wait until 2025. I will be purchasing a Honda CRV hybrid this year.
