General Motors

General Motors Company (NYSE: GM) is a linchpin of the U.S. automotive industry, selling millions of vehicles every year - 8.3 million in 2018, to be precise – and employing more than 170,000 workers. More familiarly known as GM, the auto company counts iconic brands Buick and Cadillac under its corporate umbrella, as well the more utilitarian GMC brand and the budget-conscious Chevrolet badge.

Formed in 1908 in Flint, Michigan, General Motors has a long history with the Great Lakes State. Alongside the Ford Motor Company, GM’s presence in the region and its creation of popular cars under various brands are some of the main reasons that Detroit is so widely known as Motor City. GM is a Fortune 500 company and frequently appears in the top 25 of that list as one of the largest U.S. corporations by revenue.

Here at Torque News, we cover a wide variety of stories involving General Motors, from new models and announcements to the company’s latest technology developments and electric vehicle initiatives. GM plans to release more than 20 new electric models across its major brands by 2023 and you’ll hear about all of them on this site, as well as the latest and greatest from GM’s existing models.

Many of Torque News readers already know that the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette will not have a manual transmission. I think, it's partly generational and partly a dealership issue. Here is why. A big SUEV like a Cadillac Escalade EV would sell really well under the Cadillac banner, but just like Tesla's Maxwell battery initiative, GM also needs to come up with some revolutionary EV battery initiative of their own to get head of competition. Producing an affordable EV battery will be a decisive factor in taking electric cars to the next generation.

One of the main criticisms laid at the door of General Motors and its commitment to electric vehicles is the lack of any viable charging network. Despite a nationwide chain of Chevy dealerships, many of which are located in places that could desperately use some DC fast charging hardware, GM has done very little to meet this need.

In these recent cold days and nights I am reminded of why I like my plug in hybrid. For the last few years I have leased and then owned Chevy Volts, and now I have a Cadillac ELR, which was Cadillac’s short-lived luxury coupe that shared the Volt’s drivetrain. I really liked my Volts, and the ELR even more. The biggest value of a plug in hybrid is that it is essentially an electric car. Here is why.

Bringing Back Chevy Volt from China could help GM to use the Volt as a transitional vehicle for a bit longer, so General Motors may have the time to launch additional electric car offerings.

Mark Reuss, could You give us a better explanation of why GM is killing the Volt now? asks Allen Bukoff, an automotive researcher and an avid EV enthusiast in this letter sent to Mark Reuss, the president of General Motors. It's a very interesting letter asking valid questions about untimely termination of Chevy Volt when the new generation of EVs are still two years away from showing up.

ANALYSIS AND OPINION: Until recently no one in the car industry ever had an experience of what it was like to end production of a car product due to obsolescence, they and other peer brands have produced since its invention in the mid-nineteenth century. Shutting down gas while ramping up electric is a double money losing proposition into the tens to hundreds of billions. Only the wealthiest and most powerful car companies on earth can survive this conversion process, and I look into how this is so.

ANALYSIS AND OPINION: As GM’s ten year plan for electrification and autonomy turns into a five year plan, that actually now is really an “ASAP plan,” GM is facing a reality that except for the Bolt factory, none of its North American facilities are fully ready for an all out massive BEV production schedule. As GM kills everything off about itself that burns gas, it has no choice but to turn to the Chinese for help. Please welcome the GM Chinese electric car at a dealer near you!
