Chrysler, GM Offer the Most Manual Transmission Models

If you are a Chrysler Group or General Motors fan who likes to row your own gears, you are in luck, as "FCA" and GM offer far more models with manual transmissions than do any of the other automakers doing business in the United States – with the Chrysler Group taking the slight edge overall.

If you follow the American auto industry, there is a good chance that you are familiar with the fact that manual transmissions are slowly vanishing from the lineups of almost every major automaker. At this point, unless you are buying a muscle car, you may have to shop around to find vehicles in your preferred segment that actually come with a clutch pedal. Fortunately, the folks at CarTalk and BestRide teamed up to put together a list of every single vehicle sold in the US right now with a manual transmission option. They also went into detail on each and every vehicle on that list from the Chevy Spark to the Porsche 911 to the Ram 3500, and you can check out the whole piece by clicking here.

Today, I am only concerned with looking at which automakers in the US offer the most models with a manual transmission, as those automakers are two of the companies on which I focus my attention here on TorqueNews. Someone who follows the industry closely might have expected this and others would have gotten it from the title or introduction, but the Chrysler Group and General Motors offer the most vehicles with a manual transmission while Ford Motor Company is towards the bottom of that same list.

Chrysler Leads the List
When broken down by model, the Chrysler Group has 12 vehicles sold in the US right now that can be ordered with a manual transmission. That list includes the Dodge Challenger, the Dodge Dart, the Dodge Viper, the Fiat 500, the Fiat 500L, the Fiat 500X, the Jeep Compass, the Jeep Patriot, the Jeep Renegade, the Jeep Wrangler, the Ram 2500 and the Ram 3500. The Chrysler manual transmission options also have the biggest spread across the various segments, covering everything from compact cars to SUVs to muscle cars to super cars to hard working trucks.

General Motors is a Close 2nd
General Motors is a very close second in terms of number of models available with a manual transmission and, like Chrysler, GM has a broad spectrum of manual transmission vehicles in different segments. GM offers a stick shift in the Buick Regal, the Buick Verano, the Cadillac ATS, the Chevrolet Camaro, the Chevrolet Corvette, the Chevrolet Cruze, the Chevrolet Sonic, the Chevrolet Spark, the Chevrolet SS performance sedan, the Chevrolet Colorado and the GMC Canyon – with Chevrolet clearly being the brand with the most manual transmission offerings.

Chrysler, GM Way Ahead of Ford, Others
Not only do General Motors and Chrysler lead the industry in the number of vehicles available with a manual transmission, but they do so by a massive margin. Toyota and Nissan are next in line with just 6 vehicles apiece and Ford Motor Company sits just above the bottom of the list with only 3 vehicles offered with a manual transmission – the Fiesta, the Focus and the Mustang. You can’t even get an F Series truck with a manual transmission anymore.

So, if you are in the market for a new vehicle and you simply must have a manual transmission, you can check out the CarTalk link for a closer look at every single vehicle – which Chrysler and GM fans already know where to buy their new vehicle with a clutch pedal.

Oh, yeah, that's right... Stick shifting still exists...

I might want to get one on a Sonic. I first drove it on a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta, and it was okay. I like automatics better because they make it easier to actually enjoy riding, but it's good to know where to find a manual if I'm ever looking! And the Sonic was already one I've been thinking about...
