2014 Toyota Camry ahead in sales but design switch may put 2015 Ford Fusion on top

The 2014.5 Camry is so far ahead in sales it seems unlikely Accord will catch up. However, when the new model launches late year will production issues give Accord or Fusion a brief shot at a number one in sales?

The 2014 Toyota Camry is now far ahead in sales in its category for the calendar year. Although it is in its very last year of its current design, and to be replaced by a 2015 model with an all-new look, it continues to grow in sales. In June the Camry sold 40,664 units, up 23% over last June on a daily sales rate basis. No other vehicle in this class is even close to this level of sales, or Camry’s year to date sales (YTD).

Toyota Camry Personal vs. Fleet Sales
Toyota usually sells about 15% of its Camrys to fleets like local governments and rental car companies. Even subtracting that level of sales the Camry still outpaces the Accord, which in June 32,329 units. The Accord also had a good month and was up about 10%. The real rising star of this category might be the Ford Fusion.

2015 Ford Fusion Sales Stunner
The 2015 Ford Fusion just had its best June ever, and sold an impressive 27,604 units. Ford also has good fleet sales which the company noted were up. The Fusion did particularly well in the Western US, where it was up 24%. These numbers include an amazing 1,939 Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrids, which beat the Tesla Model S in sales and propelled the Fusion to the number two spot among all cars with a plug for June. If Ford continues to post strong growth with its 2015 Fusion (on sale now) it could catch the number two Accord. However, the Ford does rely on fleet sales and those tend to come in clumps. We will watch the sales develop and report on the Fusion if it does continue its hot streak. This month the Fusion beat the Nissan Altima in sales.

New Design Launch Could Slow Camry Enough To Offer Accord or Fusion Chance
Camry is still growing robustly with what it calls its 2014.5 (twenty-fourteen and a half) model year Camry in stores now. The new Camry will arrive late year and be a very different looking car with many mechanical changes. During the approximate three month launch of the 2015 version Toyota could hit a rough patch for sales as inventory limits its sales numbers. Even if it does it will still likely edge out the number two accord for the year in total sales.

He must be on Toyota's payroll lol
It took me two minutes to reject 2014 Camry after comparing it to my 2008 Camry.
This is something between Corolla and Camry. B pillars are dangerously close to your head and shoulders.
Extremely cheaply made interior except dash board. Glove compartment reminds me of cheap car Seat cup holder plastic that can be bent with hands. I won't buy such a bad car in next 100 years

Interesting that you mention the B pillar moving forward so that it is near the driver (and side passenger). This must do better on a crash test because I have noticed not just Toyota moving the pillar forward, but also Mazda on the 3 and 6. It also makes it harder to rest your arm on the door when the window is open. Good catch.

lol...I hate driving behind current camry, its rear bumper cover shakes with death intention....Unrelated but 2014 Rav 4 under carriage from the rear looks like wilderbeest giving birth:)

I will decide very soon after looking at camry that if it is worth spending over 20K for this Camry.
I have already rejected Accrod and Altima. Accord for size, cheap tires and cheap interior, Altima for rubbury CVT Transmission even though Altima was has much better quality and options for very good price.
I would have endu buying V6 Accord but paying additional 9K to get a V6, completely drive me out of Honda Market. If Toyota try to pull the same on their customer, my third choice will be Hyundai sonata . It won't hurt me to sell for thousand less then Honda or Camry after 5-6 years.

New 2015 Camry looks promising but I don't know yet whether its a worthy investment.
2014 Camry B-Pillar is so close to your seat and shoulder that it gives you a feel of driving very small car because your elbows are keep hitting the side of your car when turning wheels. I didn't feel comfortable because the seats were smaller and chaply made. Glove compartmnet was from 80s. It seems that this car is smaller than my 2008 Camry. People must have been smoking weed if 2014 Camry is a top seller car. :)

John, I test drove Mazda 6 and I really liked and it is an excellent car but It small for guy like me who is 6 feet tall and 220 lbs . I liked Nissan Altima but I didn't like the Rubbery CVT.
I also test drove Honda accord and dropped it off from my list because of sound system, small seats, cheap tires and for few other things that they cut corners on, like Toyota Camry. I have a regret selling my 2008 V6 camry and I am left with my 2002 Lexus ES300 which is still runs and feel better than new cars after 14 years. I am really confused and don't know what to buy anymore.
