Polestar, Volvo's Swedish-based performance partner, has developed tuning software for C30, C70 and S40 models utilizing a T5 engine, for models since 2008. Priced at $1,295 installed, the tuning package goes on sale Nov. 14 and can adds a powerful boost of 23 hp and 29 lb.-ft. of torque to the respective models. The increase is realized by raising the airflow into the combustion chambers and advancing the spark timing.

Polestar, who has been optimizing cars for racing for years, has been Volvo Car Corp.'s official partner since 1996. Now, it's adding its muscle to the U.S. market.

"Our performance-oriented customers have told us they wanted a tuning option for their vehicles," said Chris Dauerer, VCNA's vice president of customer service. "With Polestar, we are able to unlock the power potential of our engines which leads to impressive acceleration and a more memorable driving experience - not to mention it adds value to the vehicle."

Polestar optimizes the power and torque without undermining fuel consumption, thanks to the efficiency of their engine tuning, which only increases the power output when needed. The package does not affect the original manufacturer warranty, so customers no longer need to take risks with "chip tuning" to achieve a more powerful driving experience.

In addition, the Polestar performance software package for V50 AWD with manual transmission will also be available soon.

Fantastic. I love both of my XC90's (one for my wife), but the V-8 is a big disappointment on gas mileage, as well as torque connection to normal driving. My T-5 engine is much more fun to drive, exception -- trying to pass on the freeway; this Polestar package should solve that problem, so Volvo, bring back the T-5 to the XC90.
