Mazda CX-5 to make North American debut at NYIAS

This is the name given to the Minagi Concept car, first introduced at the Geneva Auto Show in March, as it moves into production: the Mazda CX-5. The new compact crossover combines Mazda’s KODO design approach with their new lower- emissions SKYACTIV technology and will make its North American debut at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) this week.

KODO design seeks to embody the “soul of motion” and the CX-5 is the first production vehicle to incorporate this new design theme.

SKYACTIV technology refers to a breakthrough set of innovations in the engineering and design of engines, transmissions, bodies and frames. The CX-5 will be available worldwide in 2012

Mazda uses the CX badge to designate their line of crossover vehicles, as the CX-5 joins the Mazda CX-7 and Mazda CX-9. The CX-5 will be the most compact model in the series. The five in the name happens to be how many people it will seat.

The Mazda CX-5 will follow up the North American debut in New York with an international debut at the 64th IAA (Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung) Motor Show to be held in Frankfurt, Germany this September.

We contacted Beverly Braga, of Product Communications for Mazda, to request more specs on the new vehicle, however those will not be available until the international debut in Europe.

Look for an update at that time from TorqueNews.
