Tesla's Gigafactory Is Looking Mighty Impressive From The Looks Of This Drone Footage

An aerial Videographer Matthew Roberts recently used a DJI Phantom 3 drone to capture this impressive footage of Tesla's Gigafactory in Nevada, California which shows the vast plant well on the way to completion. The factory looks a lot different than the images and video currently on the Tesla website which only depict the building in the beginning phases of development, which shows the speed of progress to get everything up and running as soon as possible.

Six months ago the plant was only 14% complete, but production did start on the lithium ion batteries in the completed parts of the factory and was opened for a short time to journalists for the first time. Up to that point Tesla had been quite secretive about the plant. Currently, battery packs are being produced at the facility, but not yet the internal cells. The planned 10 million square foot facility is set to be finalised by 2020 and will be one of the largest factories in the world and with the multiple floors on the building this could extend it to 15 million square feet. It also looks like production will be scaled up in the building as it ends completion.

Tesla will produce all of its lithium ion batteries in the facility for all of its vehicles and subsidiary companies, expecting to reduce the cost per kilowatt hour(kWh) of its battery packs by 30 percent. The facility itself will be powered by renewable local energy resources such as wind power, hopefully making for a truly green production facility.

The Gigafactory is said to be born out of necessity to reach their target of 500,000 cars per year by the end of the decade from 80,000 this year and reach Tesla's vision of changing the automobile industry to an electric future. With the upcoming Model 3 due to be released at a price point of $35,000 and with a 215 mile range, the new factory needs to get up to speed as soon as possible as most of Tesla's car manufacture is currently done at their Fremont, California factory which is a 5.3 million square foot facility. All this expansion is planned to make Tesla, one of the main players in the auto industry.

In other snippets of Tesla news just in time for the holiday season, Tesla have unlocked one of their 'Easter eggs' of functionality called the 'Holiday show' via their latest updates, which gives Model X owners a pretty impressive light show, Wizards in Winter Soundtrack and even a navigation overlay of the surface of Mars. Now you can go green and look cool doing it.
