But in recent years, automakers have been showing off concepts filled with loads of technologies to peak the interest of people attending the show. For 2016, Volkswagen will be at the show with a concept that is said "to illustrate the potential future direction of the brand."

A teaser shot and video show that the concept looks to be a boxy vehicle, possibly a van with large illuminated grille and narrow headlights. An electric powertrain of some sort will provide the propulsion. Volkswagen says the concept "marks the beginning of a new era of affordable long-distance electromobility."

Some folks believe the concept is a new version of the famed Microbus. We'll know for sure when CES opens on January 6th.
