Mercedes-Benz Introduces A Sprinter for the Worker

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is considered one of the best cargo vans on sale today. One problem that drives a number of people away from the Sprinter is the high starting price of $37,490. But Mercedes-Benz has a solution and they revealed it yesterday at Chicago Auto Show.

Meet the Sprinter Worker which has a starting price of $33,490 (includes a $995 destination charge). Not only is the Worker about $4,000 cheaper than the standard Sprinter, it also undercuts the Ford Transit diesel (by about $4,000) and Ram ProMaster diesel (by about $3,000). It should be noted that gas engine version of both vans do undercut the Sprinter Worker's base price.

What do you get in the Sprinter Worker?

Not that much. Mercedes only offers the Worker in 144-inch wheelbase and low-roof configuration. Power comes from a 2.1L turbodiesel four-cylinder with 161 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. This is paired with a seven-speed automatic.

Standard equipment includes air conditioning, Bluetooth, four-speaker audio system, power windows, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, and Mercedes' Crosswind Assist that helps keep the van on the straight and narrow during high-wind conditions.

So you're getting the bare essentials?

Yes, but considering this is a cargo van aimed at commercial buyers, it is pretty much in line with the other vans. More important to commercial buyers is how much the van can hold and tow. This is where the Sprinter Worker shines. Mercedes says the van can tow up to 5,000 pounds and carry a payload of 3,512 pounds. Total cargo space stands at 319 cubic feet.

Mercedes will also offer three option packages for the Sprinter Worker,

  • CONVENIENCE Package ($1,499): Heated Power Mirrors, Cruise Control, Automatic Light and Rain Sensor (for windshield wipers), Multifunction Steering Wheel with Enhanced Info Screen and Trailer Hitch Pre- wiring
  • UTILITY Package ($2,999): includes all contents in CONVENIENCE Package, plus: Wood Cargo Floor, Rear Step, LED Lights in Cargo Compartment, Two Additional Keys (4 total), Glass in Rear Cargo Doors and Grab-handles (left/right rear door)
  • OVERTIME Package ($4,499): includes all contents in both CONVENIENCE and UTILITY packages, plus: Upgraded Audio System, Highbeam Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Rear View Camera, First Aid Kit and Emergency Flashlight

When can I pick up one?

You'll be able to pick a Sprinter Worker this spring.
