Mercedes-Benz G500 4x4² Could Come To the U.S.

We have to admit we like what crazy things Mercedes-Benz has been doing to the Geländewagen or G-Class This old-school off-road monster has undergone various changes such a six-wheel truck or dropping an AMG V12 under the hood.

Then we come to their latest creation, the G500 4x4². Going on sale in various parts of Europe last year, the G500 4x4² features portal axles and giant beadlocked axles from the G-Wagen 6×6 and a lifted suspension. This gives the 4x4² 17.7 inches of ground clearance and the ford up to 39.3 inches of water. If you're wondering, the standard G-Class only offers 8.1 inches of ground clearance. Power comes a Biturbo V8 with 415 horsepower.

Now this model isn't sold in the U.S., but that could be changing. Bart Herring, Mercedes' general manager of product planning in the U.S. tells Motor1 that the G500 4x4² has a good chance of coming. Herring explained that the German automaker is "very close to a good decision" on U.S. sales.

The G-Class isn't a big seller in the U.S. - 3,616 sold here in 2015. But sales are increasing with a number of them taking place in Southern California. If given the go-ahead, we believe the G500 4x4² could come as early as 2017.
