It gets inspiration from its racing heritage. The highly anticipated 2015 Subaru WRX STI high-performance sedan has made its global debut at NAIAS in Detroit, Michigan. We have already seen the leaked images a few days before the world premiere today. Subaru says the new performance flagship from STI has been re-engineered for supreme balance, speed and comes with improved handling.

Subaru has completely redesigned the 2015 WRX STI. Everything from the engine, suspension and interior is all-new for the new-generation performance sedan. The new WRX STI continues in the tradition of performance and was inspired and built for racers around the globe. Here is what we learned today from the global debut at NAIAS.

The new WRX STI gets a completely “remastered track-tuned suspension, a tighter steering ratio and still comes with a 305 horsepower turbocharged boxer engine. Subaru chose not to bump up the horsepower in the new-generation STI. It keeps the same 2.5-liter powerplant, but gets substantial upgrades underneath to improve handling and performance.

What’s new for 2015?

New for the 2015 WRX STI, it gets Active Torque Vectoring for more dynamic handling and that includes Multi-Mode Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, Multi-Mode Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), SI-DRIVE powertrain control system and a Brembo Performance Brake System with Super Sport ABS.

A special STI Launch Edition will be coming and will be exclusively equipped with special interior colors and trim and gets a standard STI Short-Throw Shifter for the 6-speed manual transmission. The Keyless Access & Start system, which is offered as an option on WRX STI Premium and Limited models, is included as standard with the STI Launch Edition. It will be ultra-exclusive with only 1000 units produced. It will come in Rally Blue and Gold wheels that made the rally cars famous.

Tom Doll President of Subaru of America says the new 2015 WRX STI will “drive like nothing else, I promise you! It will drive better than you expect. It’s more than capable of the red STI badge.”
