2 new 600hp Subarus join Global RallyCross but fans won't see the 2015 WRX STI

Subaru Rally Team USA has announced a 3rd WRX STI Global Rallycross car for the next three rounds of Red Bull GRC. Why aren't fans seeing the 2015 WRX STI GRC?

GRC fans have been waiting all year for the 2015 Subaru WRX STI Global Rallycross car to make its debut, and Travis Pastrana and David Higgins won’t be driving it. Subaru Rally Team USA has announced another driver along with David Higgins, will join the team for the last three Red Bull Global Rallycross races. Travis Pastrana will join the team in the #199 2014 WRX STI GRC-prepped car in LA September 19-21 and David Higgins will drive the #715 2014 WRX STI in the Seattle GRC the following week, September 26-27.

Subaru Rally Team USA’s Red Bull Global Rallycross team comprised of Bucky Lasek and Sverre Isachsen have been running the 2014 WRX STI GRC cars all season. Vermont SportsCar builds and maintains the cars and a 2015 WRX STI has been in their shop before the season began. Subaru even unveiled the new 2015 STI in GRC trim at the New York International Auto Show in April. Fans want to see the new 2015 STI GRC, but Pastrana and Higgins will return to GRC for the last three events driving a previous generation 2014 WRX STI.

Pastrana returns to GRC in LA

Pastrana has already competed in the GRC series this year at X Games Austin and will rejoin Lasek and Isachsen and make his second appearance in a 2014 WRX STI GRC car for Subaru Rally Team USA in LA. Pastrana says, “I’ve focused on rally with Subaru this year but had a blast driving the team’s GRC car in Austin and I jumped at the chance to come back and do it again in Los Angeles. The racing in GRC is intense and the Subaru team is really strong right now so I’m really looking forward to it!”

Higgins returns to GRC in Seattle

Higgins will join Subaru’s Lasek and Isachsen at the Red Bull Global Rallycross at the series’ Seattle round, held at DirtFish Rally School in Snoqualmie. Higgins isn’t new to GRC and has worked extensively as a test driver for SRT USA and has accumulated extensive miles behind the wheel of the team’s WRX STI GRC cars. Higgins last competed in GRC in 2012.

Higgins made four appearances at Red Bull GRC-sanctioned events, including X Games appearances in 2011 and 2012. He took two podium finishes, including a bronze medal in head-to-head competition at X Games in 2011, and was a runner-up finish in Colorado in his series debut. He has maintained his presence at GRC events working as a spotter for Subaru teammates Bucky Lasek and Travis Pastrana.

GRC fans have been waiting to see the new 2015 WRX STI Global RallyCross car all season, but Travis Pastrana and David Higgins will return to GRC for the last three rounds driving previous generation 2014 WRX STIs. Next up for Subaru Rally Team USA will be the Red Bull Global Rallycross Los Angeles round. The race will air Live on NBC Saturday, September 20 at 5PM ET and Sunday September 21 at 5PM ET.
