Watch This 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Jump Out on the 2014 Shelby GT500 Mustang

In the never ending battle between Ford and Chevy performance enthusiasts, this video of a 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray against a 2014 Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang has stirred up some controversy as the far less powerful Corvette holds its own against the most powerful Mustang ever.

Now, it should be noted that comparing the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and the 2014 Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang is a bit awkward considering that the two are in very different segments but since Ford doesn’t have a proper 2-seater sports car like the Chevrolet Corvette or the SRT Viper, many publications have turned to the 2014 GT500 when looking for a Blue Oval vehicle to compare to the new C7 Corvette. On one side, Ford fans will be quick to point out that the Mustang should be compared to the Camaro and the GT500 should be compared to the Camaro ZL1. ON the other side, GM fans will point out that the Corvette has “only” 460 horsepower while the GT500 packs 662 horsepower.

On paper, discussing who would win in a drag race between the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and the 2014 Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang seems like a pretty simple case as the Mustang’s 202 horsepower advantage should allow the GT500 to make very short work of the Stingray. However, there is the fact that the Corvette has a high tech launch control system that allows it to make better use of the available power and the Corvette weighs somewhere in the area of 400 pounds less than the mightiest of Mustangs…but would that be enough to overcome the power differential when racing in a straight line?

Yes and No.

As you can see in the video below, the 2014 Corvette Stingray quickly and effortlessly rips away from the start on the third honk and within a few seconds, the new Stingray pulls out to a pretty impressive lead over the GT500. Unfortunately for GM fans, about ten seconds in the GT500 begins to pull hard on the Corvette and blasts around him as the advantage in power takes over. There is obviously no official timing in this video but the race begins around the 26-27 and the Mustang pulls even with the Corvette around the 40 second mark so in 13 (or so) seconds, the GT500 is able to use all of its muscle to equalize the Corvette’s starting line advantage. The problem with this is that both of these cars *should* run the quarter mile in the 11 second range so had these two cars been on a measured quarter mile, there is a good chance that the early lead by the Vette would have been enough to allow the 460hp Chevy to claim the win.

There is also the aspect that the Mustang had a passenger while the Corvette did not and the Corvette may have gotten a slight head start on the 3 honk launch – both of which wouldn’t have been factors in a real racing environment. However, most of these battles will take place outside of the friendly confines of a closed circuit so this video shows that a well driven 2014 Corvette has a very real chance of hurting the feelings of 2014 Mustang GT500 owners in a short sprint away from a stop light.
