Video of the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 tearing up the Nürburgring

General Motors announced yesterday that they had taken the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 to the famed Nürburgring through the world of social media and today, we have our first look at the ZL1 roaring around the massive road course – offering us a virtual ride along in the new super Camaro as it ran a time that puts it on par with some very exotic company.

In addition to uploading an in-car video of the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 to YouTube, General Motors issued a statement on the new muscle car’s 7:41.27 lap around the 154-turn course that covers 12.9 miles of the Nürburg countryside. The company refers to the Camaro ZL1 seen in the video as a “production intent” model, meaning that it is pretty much exactly how those ZL1s sold to the public will be when they hit the streets next year and behind the wheel was Camaro Performance Engineer Aaron Link.

“The ZL1’s full capability is evident at the Nürburgring,” said Link. “One of the best moments is coming through ‘Fuchsröhre’, or Foxhole. The ZL1 accelerates at an unbelievable rate down through the tunnel of trees, and into a sweeping left-hand corner flat out in fifth gear. You have to have an extremely well-mannered, confidence-inspiring car to take any corner at 160 mph without lifting off the throttle – and the ZL1 was just brilliant.”

The additions to the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 compared to the 2009 Camaro SS that ran the Ring some 40 seconds slower (8:20) were vast, with roughly 30% of the vehicle components differing between the standard SS to the ZL1. This allowed the Camaro ZL1 to best the times turned in by the Porsche 911 GT3 and the Lamborghini Murciélago LP670-4 SuperVeloce, while hitting a top speed of 171 miles per hour at the end of the long straightaway towards the end of the lap. It was also just 4 hundredths of a second slower than the 2011 Porsche 911 Turbo S – one of the world’s most respected performance models.

Anyway, enough with the talk. Below is the GM video of the 2012 Camaro ZL1 tackling the Nurburgring in a supercar-like time of just 7 minutes and 41.27 seconds.

The car sounded awesome as it flew around the Nordschliefe. All American muscle cars look great too.
