The Jeep Cherokee Overland makes its US debut in Moab

The SUV pictured below is commonly known as the Jeep Liberty to American consumers but to outside of the US, the Liberty is known as the Cherokee so to show a little Mopar love to a non-US model, the 2011 Easter Jeep Safari will introduce the US to the Jeep Cherokee Overland.

Not to be mistaken with the US-issue high end Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland, the Cherokee Overland by Mopar is based on a European Jeep “Liberty”, adding an array of items to help a weekend adventurer to crawl into the deep woods and even make the stay more comfortable. This mid-sized SUV is powered by a 2.8L Common Rail Diesel (CRD) turbo oilburner, sending the power to the wheels via an automatic transmission and the Selec-Trac II four wheel drive system. In addition to the back and white paint scheme, the Cherokee Overland wears an unusual zebra print – presumably to push the whole safari theme.

The majority of the modifications made to the Jeep Cherokee Overland are provided by ARB, with items including a steel roof rack, awning, compact refrigerator, rock rails, air locking rear differential and a 3” suspension lift. When combined with the Old Man Emu shocks and the Mickey Thompson 265/75-R16 MTZ tires wrapped around some fantastic old-school steel wheels, the Cherokee Overland should prove to be quite capable on weekend romps through the woods. While on those overnight trips, things like the roof rack, awning and fridge providing additional storage space for cargo and a few cold beers (for when the mudding is done, of course).

Next, Mopar took the ARB-modified Cherokee Overland and added skid plates to protect the front suspension, transmission and transfer case; along with some interior dress-up items and front/rear tow hooks.

The Jeep Cherokee Overland offers a great look at what can be done to the Jeep Liberty for US consumers as shy of the turbo diesel engine (only a 3.7L V6 gas engine is available in the US right now), this vehicle is vastly more capable without any items that aren’t doable for the average weekend warrior.
