GM says no 2013 Chevrolet Trailblazer for the US market

Yesterday we brought you the news that General Motors would unveil a new 2013 Chevrolet Trailblazer at the 2011 Dubai Motor Show and while we questioned whether or not the new sport ute would be available in the US, GM has stated that they have no immediate plans to offer the new SUV in the USA.

The 2013 Chevrolet Trailblazer will be based on the new mid-sized global platform that will carry the new Chevrolet Colorado, which GM recently announced would be sold in the United States even though it is being launched elsewhere (Thailand) first. The new Colorado went very quickly from being a concept model for the foreign market to a truck that Americans will be able to buy at their local Chevy dealership and while we would assume the same for the Trailblazer – reports indicate otherwise.

General Motors told Inside Line that when introduced in production form, the 2013 Chevrolet Trailblazer will be sold in Thailand followed by some other Asian markets and South America. The new Trailblazer is based on a truck architecture so unlike many modern popular SUVs in the US (Ford Explorer, Jeep Grand Cherokee), the Trailblazer will have a body-on-frame construction as opposed to unibody. Many off-roading and general SUV enthusiasts in the US have been grumbling about the trendy shift to unibody so reintroducing the Chevy Trailblazer in the US market could help satisfy those Americans who want a truck-based SUV. Unfortunately, there is no real indication as to how long it could be before the Chevy Trailblazer is introduced to the US market.

However, with the new Chevy Trailblazer being available as close as South America and the closely related Chevrolet Colorado being sold in the US with similar underpinnings, the chances of a new Trailblazer in the US market are very good…albeit a while off. As an interesting additional point, yesterday while driving through the miserable rain near the GM Proving Grounds, I passed a black Chevrolet SUV in traffic that was smaller then their current SUVs. Sadly, I wasn't able to get a picture of this mystery SUV but once the new Trailblazer is introduced in Dubai next month I may be able to confirm whether or not these new SUVs are being tested in US roads.
