A Closer Look at the 2015 Dodge Charger Teaser

When the news dropped yesterday that the 2015 Dodge Challenger and 2015 Dodge Charger would debut at the upcoming 2014 New York International Auto Show, I was so enamored with the promise of an all-new Challenger that I skipped over the fact that the company issued a teaser of the new Charger – so here it is today.

Chrysler stated yesterday that every body panel of the 2015 Dodge Charger will be new and honestly, I’m surprised to hear that as the Charger is – in my opinion – one of the best looking large sedans sold in America. Dodge calls it a 4 door muscle car and the look of the 2014 Charger fits that description to the T. The Charger looks angry and aggressive and fast, with the refresh for the 2011 model year making an already sharp looking sedan even better. From front to back, the current Dodge Charger is one slick looking performance sedan – yet that company is changing that all for 2015.

The image above is the first official look at the 2015 Dodge Charger and while we cannot see much; what we can see is a drastic departure from the look of the 2014 models. Although the 2011 Charger got a facelift that made it more aggressive, the Charger front end has been relatively similar since being introduced for the 2006 model year with squared headlights set out apart from the large crosshair grille. The crosshair is back for 2015, but grille appears to be wider, connecting to the curvy new headlights. The headlights are trimmed across the top and bottom with LED bars with what looks to be a large projection unit providing the light.

What is most interesting is the shape of the area below the grille and headlights of the 2015 Dodge Charger. It looks as though the grille flows down through the area that some older drivers might call “the bumper”. Unlike the previous Charger sedans which have had distinct separation between the upper and lower grille openings, it looks as though the 2015 Charger will have a more fluid design through the middle. When I altered the lighting of this image to better show the shadowy areas, I can also see what appears to be a hood devoid of the indented portions that are found on the 2014 Charger – instead having a raised center section.

Honestly, I have a very hard time looking at this first teaser and seeing how it will fit the lines of the Charger so I am eagerly awaiting the debut of the 2015 Dodge Charger. The Charger has become one of the Chrysler Group’s bestselling cars so a drastic refresh like this could go a long way in helping to build on the success of the previous models – but there is no question that this strikingly different look could anger some of those folks in the Mopar World. Much in the same way that some Corvette fans hate the C7 and how some Mustang lovers hate the 2015 Mustang – there will be those critics of the 2015 Dodge Charger, but an even more aggressive look could help the big Dodge performance sedan to stay ahead of the new Chevrolet SS.
