2016 Camaro Could Go on Sale August 13th

While there has been no official word from General Motors, a new rumor indicates that the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro could go on sale on August 13th, 2015 with production beginning the following week – a rumor that makes sense from some angles but not others.

Since the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro was introduced last month on Detroit’s Belle Isle, prospective buyers have been clamoring for information on how and when they can officially place their order for the 6th generation Camaro. There has been no official word thus far from General Motors, but a rumor supported by “insider information” suggests that the 2016 Camaro will go on sale on August 13th, 2015 with production beginning the following week.

This comes after we learned last month that the company does plan to begin delivering the next gen Camaro in the fall while the 5th generation Camaro will continue being built in Canada until November 20th, 2015. This information isn’t official, but it could most certainly be true, even though some people are insisting that the August date is actually too early.

When Will the 2016 Camaro Arrive?
There have been comments by various General Motors reps stating that the company will begin delivering the 2016 Camaro before the end of 2015, specifically focusing on the fall of 2015. This rumor insists that the 6th gen Camaro will go on sale on August 13th and production will begin on August 22nd. Provided that the 2016 Camaro goes on sale and begins production in mid-August, the expected quality control process of the first new models would likely delay delivery into the heart of the fall, so these dates kind of make sense.

At the same time, with production of the 2015 Camaro in Canada scheduled to run through November 20th, it seems unlikely that GM would overlap production of the two generations for that long. While I would expect some overlap in production due to the continued success of the current models and the fact that they are built in two different locations – thus alleviating the need for retooling downtime – three months of production overlap seems extreme. Also, August 22nd is a Saturday and I’m not sure that the company would begin building the next generation Camaro on a Saturday.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the order banks for the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro do open on August 13th, but I don’t think that production will begin on August 22nd if 2015 Camaro production really is running until November 20th.

The Camaro Arrives Late
Whether the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro goes on sale on August 13th or later, there is no question that the 6th gen Camaro is a bit late to the party – not because the newest generation Camaro arrived a year after the newest generation Challenger and Mustang, but because it is going on sale so late in the year.

When the 2015 Ford Mustang became available for orders, it did so in May of 2014 while the 2015 Dodge Challenger officially went on sale in late July of 2015. If the new Camaro does go on sale on August 13th, it will already be going on sale later than the new Mustang and Camaro relative to the end of the calendar year. Because of that, I believe that the Camaro could go on sale in August, as GM should try to get the car on the market as quickly as possible to better battle the Mustang and the Challenger.
