The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic configurator comes online

The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic enters the world with the hopes of exercising the devils of the Chevy Aveo that it is replacing and those wanting to get their hands on one of these spunky new Chevy B segment compacts can now build their dream Chevy Sonic on the Chevrolet website.

The model specific page on the Chevrolet website for the 2012 Sonic opens with a screen that is half orange and half grey, with the 5-door hatchback on the left and the 4-door sedan on the right with a button for each option that plainly reads “Play with this one”. Once you pick the form that you prefer (I chose the hatchback), you are swept away to a screen where you can use your arrow keys to change the “camera” angle and the color of the 2012 Sonic 5-door, with more options on the left side to learn about the new B segment Chevy. Along the bottom is a button to build your own and when you click that, you are presented with a unique build page that shows you all of the options laid out with the explanation of what trimlines come with which features, with the available options for the given trimline showing as being ‘lit up’ while the features not available with the chosen trimline shaded in.

The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic Hatchback in LS form begins at $14,635 which includes the 138hp 1.8L engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission with white, silver, bright red and black coming with that price. Should you opt for the Sonic LS in Inferno Orange Metallic the price goes up to $14,830 and Crystal Red Tintcoat bumps the price to $14,960 while the price with the automatic transmission (and the “free” paint codes) jumps to $15,705. With this low priced trimline, 15” painted aluminum wheels and Jet Black/Dark Titanium interior finishes are standard.

When you pick the 2012 Sonic LT trimline, you receive the option to select the 1.4L turbocharged engine that packs the same horsepower as the 1.8L engine, but this engine comes with a 6-speed manual transmission, 23 more lb-ft of torque and a price increase to $16,760 (the Sonic LT with the 1.8L begins at $16,060). This package includes more wheel options, foglights, and upgrades like the Connectivity package while the Sonic LT receives similar price upgrades based on the color chosen.

Finally, the high end trimline for the 2012 Chevy Sonic is the LTZ package, which includes the 1.8L engine and the 5-speed manual for $17,235 with those colors that do not bring about an upcharge. Adding an automatic transmission brings the price up to $18,495 while opting for the turbocharged 1.4L engine and the 6-speed manual costs just $17,935 – making it cheaper than the auto-shifted, less powerful model which is one more reason to row your own gears. The Sonic LTZ also comes with 17” painted aluminum wheels, leather seats and the option of a sunroof that raises the price to $18,785 (Sonic LTZ, 1.4 turbo engine, sunroof). If you select the sexy dark metallic red shown above on the right with the turbo engine and sunroof, the Sonic LTZ will cost you $19,110 and the most expensive current option is the Sonic LTZ with the 1.8L engine, Crystal Red Tintcoat exterior paint, automatic transmission and sunroof will set you back $19,670.

The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic Sedan offers the same trimlines with similar price increases for colors, trimlines and options but the base price of the Sonic LS is $13,735 in the basic colors with the 1.8L engine and 5-speed manual transmission. The Sonic LT Sedan begins at $14,935 while the high end Sonic LTZ comes with a base price of $16,535 and the loaded up (turbo engine, sunroof) Sonic LTZ Sedan carries a price of $18,085.
